Will there be the End of the World. . .December 21, 2012?

I created this lens as a result of watching the History Channel's Armageddon Week Jan. 4-11 2009. I watched many of the various segments being featured and it really got me thinking. Will the world end on December 21, 2012 as many predict? Many of today's events; earthquakes, floods, illness, fires, wars, global warming, etc. appear to me and many others to be "signs" of the Apocalypse.

The seven signs of the Apocalypse describes the events that will take place before the final battle between good & evil occurs - the start of Armageddon...

I am not sure what I believe but the show definitely caught my attention and had me glued to the TV. I hope you enjoy my collection of resources and information here about the predictions of the end of the world in 2012.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Information below was taken from: Ask.yahoo.com on Jan. 11, 2009
As with many questions related to Biblical scripture and prophecy, the answer is by no means simple. The book of Revelation, which details the apocalypse, doesn't include a definitive list of "seven signs." Over time, popular culture and various Christian sects created this concept based on their interpretations of events prophesied to take place before Armageddon, or the final battle of good and evil on Earth.
Many people believe that the seven signs directly correlate to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse described in Rev. 6:1-12. Expanding on that notion, others speculate on Revelation's list of seven seals, seven vials, and seven trumpets and what these symbols represent in today's world. For example, some say the Red Horseman and the second seal could represent a third World War, while others believe that the fourth seal, plagues and pestilence, represents modern diseases such as AIDS or cancer.
The number seven is a popular symbol throughout the Bible. And one school of thought supports a less literal interpretation of the seven signs. Advocates of this theory point out that not only is "seven" used frequently, but also many sections of the Bible aside from Revelation are considered "prophetic." They conclude that there may not be seven actual signs, and they may or may not all be found in Revelation.
What exactly is an apocalypse?
Apocalypse (Greek: Apokálypsis; "lifting of the veil" or "revelation") is a term applied to the disclosure to certain privileged persons of something hidden from the majority of humankind. Today the term is often used to refer to Armageddon, also referred to as the end of the world, which may be a shortening of the phrase apokalupsis eschaton which literally means "revelation at the end of the æon, or age". In the Christian tradition, 'The Apocalypse' refers in particular to the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible.
What is Armageddon?
Armageddon (Arabic ???????, Late Latin: ,Collins English Dictionary, HarperCollins, 3rd ed., p. 81 Harmaged?n,http://bibletranslation.ws/trans/revwgrk.pdfhttp://scripturetext.com/revelation/16-16.htm har m?giddô) is the site of an epic battle associated with the end time prophecies of the Abrahamic religions.
According to traditional Christian interpretations, the Messiah, the "Lamb", will return to earth and defeat the Antichrist, the "Beast", in the battle of Armageddon. Then Satan will be put into the bottomless pit or abyss for 1,000 years, known as the Millennial age. After being released from the abyss, Satan will gather Gog and Magog from the four corners of the earth. They will encamp surrounding the holy ones and the "beloved city". Fire will come down from God, out of heaven and devour Gog and Magog at Armageddon, and the Devil who deceived them is thrown into Gehenna (the lake of fire and brimstone) where the Beast and the False Prophet have been since just before the 1,000 years.Book of Revelation in the New Testament, Rev. 19: 11-20, Rev. 20: 1-3, 7-10.
The word Armageddon appears only once in the Greek New Testament. The word comes from Hebrew har m?giddô (), meaning "Mountain of Megiddo". Megiddo was the location of many decisive battles in ancient times (see Battle of Megiddo). The town Megiddo is approximately west of the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee (or Lake Tiberias to the Romans) in the Kishon River area.
Who were the Maya?
They believed that civilization will end on December 21, 2012
The Maya had advanced means for creating their calendar which made predictions for the future.
The Maya is a Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Initially established during the Preclassic period (c. 2000 BC to 250 AD), many Maya cities reached their highest state development during the Classic period (c. 250 AD to 900 AD), and continued throughout the Postclassic period until the arrival of the Spanish. At its peak, it was one of the most densely populated and culturally dynamic societies in the world.
The Maya civilization shares many features with other Mesoamerican civilizations due to the high degree of interaction and cultural diffusion that characterized the region. Advances such as writing, epigraphy, and the calendar did not originate with the Maya; however, their civilization fully developed them. Maya influence can be detected from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and to as far as central Mexico, more than 1000 km (625 miles) from the Maya area. Many outside influences are found in Maya art and architecture, which are thought to result from trade and cultural exchange rather than direct external conquest.
The Maya peoples never disappeared, neither at the time of the Classic period decline nor with the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores and the subsequent Spanish colonization of the Americas. Today, the Maya and their descendants form sizable populations throughout the Maya area and maintain a distinctive set of traditions and beliefs that are the result of the merger of pre-Columbian and post-Conquest ideas and cultures. Many Mayan languages continue to be spoken as primary languages today; the Rabinal Achí, a play written in the Achi' language, was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005.
The Mayan Calendar ~ Did they predict the end of the world would be in 2012?
Did they know something we don't?
Their calendar indicated that the end of civilization will be on Dec. 21, 2012 - probably by flood!
The Maya calendar is a system of distinct calendars and almanacs used by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, and by some modern Maya communities in highland Guatemala.
The essentials of the Maya calendric system are based upon a system which had been in common use throughout the region, dating back to at least the 6th century BC. It shares many aspects with calendars employed by other earlier Mesoamerican civilizations, such as the Zapotec and Olmec, and contemporary or later ones such as the Mixtec and Aztec calendars. Although the Mesoamerican calendar did not originate with the Maya, their subsequent extensions and refinements of it were the most sophisticated. Along with those of the Aztecs, the Maya calendars are the best-documented and most completely understood.
By the Maya mythological tradition, as documented in Colonial Yucatec accounts and reconstructed from Late Classic and Postclassic inscriptions, the deity Itzamna is frequently credited with bringing the knowledge of the calendar system to the ancestral Maya, along with writing in general and other foundational aspects of Maya culture.See entry on Itzamna, in Miller and Taube (1993), pp.99-100.
Who is Nostradamus?
Michel de Nostredame (14 December or 21 December 1503Guinard, Dr Patrice, CURA Forum - 2 July 1566), usually Latinised to Nostradamus, was a French apothecary and reputed seer who published collections of prophecies that have since become famous worldwide. He is best known for his book Les Propheties ("The Prophecies"), the first edition of which appeared in 1555. Since the publication of this book, which has rarely been out of print since his death, Nostradamus has attracted a following that, along with the popular press, credits him with predicting many major world events. The prophecies have in some cases been assimilated to the results of applying the alleged Bible code, as well as to other purported prophetic works.
Most academic sources maintain that the associations made between world events and Nostradamus's quatrains are largely the result of misinterpretations or mistranslations (sometimes deliberate) or else are so tenuous as to render them useless as evidence of any genuine predictive power. Moreover, none of the sources listed offers any evidence that anyone has ever interpreted any of Nostradamus's quatrains specifically enough to allow a clear identification of any event in advance.Lemesurier, Peter, The Unknown Nostradamus, 2003
Nostradamus Predictions About 2012
This topic is making a buzz on internet right now: is December 2012 the date of the apocalypse? Are we already doomed and will a giant comet strike planet earth? Many predictions from all over the world and ages tend to agree on one point: the world should change within the next few years.
What is Galactic Alignment ~ This for sure is going to happen on Dec. 21, 2012
But how is it going to affect us here on Earth? This alignment only happens every 26,000 years. It will occur again on December 21, 2012.
Category: File - :La Mojarra Inscription and Long Count date.jpg|right|thumb|200px|A date inscription for the Mayan Long Count
The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs and proposals, which posit that cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on December 21 or December 23, 2012,Sitler 2006, Defesche 2007 which is said to be the end-date of a 5,125-year-long Mayan Long Count calendar. These beliefs may derive in part from archaeoastronomical speculation, alternative interpretations of mythology, numerological constructions, or alleged prophecies from extraterrestrial beings.
A New Age interpretation of this transition posits that, during this time, the planet and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era.For a sample of views see discussion and interviews in New York Times Magazine article (Anastas 2007). Conversely, some believe that the 2012 date marks the beginning of an apocalypse. Both ideas have been disseminated in numerous books and TV documentaries, and have spread around the world through websites and discussion groups.
Scholars of various stripes have disputed the idea that a catastrophe will happen in 2012, suggesting that predictions of impending doom are found neither in classic Maya accounts nor in contemporary science. Mainstream Mayanist scholars argue that the idea that the Long Count calendar "ends" in 2012 misrepresents Maya history. To the modern Maya, 2012 is largely irrelevant, and classic Maya sources on the subject are scarce and contradictory, suggesting that there was little if any universal agreement among them about what, if anything, the date might mean.
Meanwhile, astronomers and other natural scientists have rejected the apocalyptic forecasts, on the grounds that the anticipated events are precluded by astronomical observations, or are unsubstantiated by the predictions that have been generated from these findings.[http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html "2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End?"]. NASA. NASA likens fears about 2012 to those about the Y2K bug in the late 1990s, suggesting that an adequate analysis should stem fears of disaster.
What is Fulcanelli
Fulcanelli (1839 - last seen in 1953) is almost certainly a pseudonym assumed, in the late 19th century, by a French alchemist and esoteric author, whose identity is still debated.Patrick Riviere Fulcanelli, p. 29, Red Pill Press Ltd, 2006 ISBN 978-1897244210 The name Fulcanelli seems to be a play on words: Vulcan the ancient Roman god of fire plus El, a Canaanite name for God and so the Sacred Fire.Mark Stavish The Path of Alchemy, p. 171, Llewellyn Worldwide, 2006 ISBN 978-0738709031 He is also called the Master Alchemist. The appeal of Fulcanelli as a cultural phenomenon is partly due to the mystery that surrounds most aspects of his life and works; one of the anecdotes pertaining to his life retells, in particular, how his most devoted pupil Eugène Canseliet performed a successful transmutation of 100 grams of lead into gold in a laboratory of the gas works of Sarcelles at the Georgi company with the use of a small quantity of the "Projection Powder" given to him by his teacher, in the presence of Julien Champagne and Gaston Sauvage.
Fulcanelli is only known through his books Mystery of the Cathedrals (Le Mystere. The books were published by Fulcanelli's pupils Eugene Canseliet and Jean-Julien.
Freemason
Many people say they hold secrets through the their work.
Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation that arose from obscure origins in the late 16th to early 17th century. Freemasonry now exists in various forms all over the world, with a membership estimated at around 5 million, including just under two million in the United States and around 480,000 in England, Scotland and Ireland.Hodapp, Christopher. Freemasons for Dummies. Indianapolis: Wiley, 2005. p. 52.
The various forms all share moral and metaphysical ideals, which include, in most cases, a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being.
The fraternity is administratively organised into Grand Lodges (or sometimes Orients), each of which governs its own jurisdiction, which consists of subordinate (or constituent) Lodges. Grand Lodges recognise each other through a process of landmarks and regularity. There are also appendant bodies, which are organisations related to the main branch of Freemasonry, but with their own independent administration.
Freemasonry uses the metaphors of operative stonemasons' tools and implements, against the allegorical backdrop of the building of King Solomon's Temple, to convey what has been described by both Masons and critics as "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."Masonic Service Association - Short Talk Bulletin as reprinted on the website of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana.
What are the Hopi Prophecies
They believe the End of the Earth is coming too!
The Hopi are a Native American people who primarily live on the 12,635 km² (2,531.773 sq mi) Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona. The Hopi Reservation is entirely surrounded by the much larger Navajo Reservation. The two nations used to share the Navajo-Hopi Joint Use Area. The partition of this area, commonly known as Big Mountain, by Acts of Congress in 1974 and 1996, has resulted in seemingly endless controversy.aisc.orgkstrom.netnau.edu
The Hopi area according to the 2000 census has a population of 6,946 people.
The Egyptian pyramids are ancient pyramid-shaped masonry structures located in Egypt.
There are 138 pyramids discovered in Egypt as of 2008. Most were built as tombs for the country's Pharaohs and their consorts during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods.
Michael Ritter (2003) [http://www.uwsp.edu/geo/faculty/ritter/geog101/textbook/connections/connections_dating_pyramids.html] Dating the Pyramids. Retrieved 13 April 2005
The earliest known Egyptian pyramid is the Pyramid of Djoser which was built during the third dynasty. This pyramid and its surrounding complex were designed by the architect Imhotep, and are generally considered to be the world's oldest monumental structures constructed of dressed masonry.
The best known Egyptian pyramids are those found at Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo. Several of the Giza pyramids are counted among the largest structures ever built."The Great Pyramid...is still one of the largest structures ever raised by man, its plan twice the size of St. Peters in Rome"''
The Pyramid of Khufu at Giza is the largest Egyptian pyramid. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence.
The Book of Revelation & 2012 ... what do you think?
Armageddon
What are your thoughts on Dec. 21, 2012, will this be the end of planet earth? Find out on History about Armageddon.
Many philosophers, religious leaders, and even scientists believe it will be the End of Earth on Dec. 21, 2012
Do you agree?
Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by
Yes, I agree!
jptanabe says:
Yes, I hope the world as we know it will end. Not the beautiful earth and all the creatures and all the planets etc, but the way human beings are. It's time for humankind to be kind, to stop being selfish and putting priorities in the wrong things, and to begin to live in a world of peace and prosperity. So if all those prophecies from so many cultures and times in history point to 12-21-2012 as a significant date that sounds good to me - we need some help to get us out of the mess we've dug ourselves into!
Renagade says:
When all the signs seem to be pointed in that direction, yes. It may not be the end as in final, but the end of things as we know it? Yes.
TheWhistler says:
Possibly.
CosmicOneness says:
2012 Dawn Of The Golden Age :)
Kerrie says:
If it's our time it's our time nothing we can do about it.
motorpurrr says:
Well, thoughts are things. When we think about something all the time, we create our world and who we are. There are so many people thinking that the end is then, that we will self distruct anyways, just from our own fear and power of suggestion. Seriously, it's time for a world clean up.
says:
I believe it. I am excited to see what happens. Everybody can't be wrong.
poddys says:
I hope not, but I believe that mankind goes back a long time before the Egyptians and Sumerians, pre-flood and probably Atlantis and other civilizations did exist. Doesn't it seem odd that the further you go back in time, the more people knew about the heavens. Makes sense then to believe that they had enough knowledge to calculate ahead. I wonder how much the church and the governments are keeping from us?
Jack2205 says:
There are more wars, floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters now than what there has ever been. The world economy is in bad shape and it will only get worse. There probably will be a World War III soon. The end of the world will come.
Albert17 says:
I watched the same special on the History Channel and I believe it will either be the end of the world as we know it or help us to fix civilization now before it is too late and we will do things differently. No matter what the galactic alignment will happen and no one really knows how that will affect the Earth. It is just crazy how the Mayans and the Egyptians so into the future and knew things about the galaxy before they had the technology to "know it".
No way, I think it is a bunch of superstition
Non-Believer says:
Bats71, you're wrong. That galactic alignment occured in 1998. It's over, and the end of the world is not coming, we're going to keep on going. I can't wait for people to freak out and start selling their stuff dirt cheap though. Imagine getting a house for free because the owner believes the end of the world is coming! I'm not one to manipulate people, but if you're going to believe the conspiracy theorists who believed in Y2K, and think that the government is brainwashing us, and think aliens are abudicting us, then I have no qualms with being an oppurtunist. If you want me to have your mansion for a can of beans, then so be it, but don't expect me to give it back when the world doesn't end.
dustytoes says:
The Bible says that only God knows the exact time, so I would have to say no! Although I do believe it will end... and soon.
CleanerLife says:
It's interesting to speculate, but I really think some of these things are interrupted by people to achieve some sort of sensationalism. I really don't put much stock in it! I didn't fall for Y2K, either! :)
TrinaSonnenberg says:
It really doesn't matter, being that no one can stop it if it happens. I plan to have a party that day.
jt says:
no only god knows
boshemia says:
People have been predicting the end of the world since the beginning of time... I think I'll take my chances and just go on with my life.
Bats71 says:
Truthfully, I don't know if its going to be the "end of the world" per say, but I would think that its going to be an extreme changing time for humanity and the planet. With gravitational forces coming to a head in the cosmos at that time, there are bound to be effects felt here on the planet. That's what causes sun spots.....the force of the solar systems planets pulling on the sun. Once we reach the galactic alignment (which I am NOT disputing, its been proven this will occur, and has occurred in the past) It will no doubt increase the gravitational effects throughout the solar system. It will likely cause increased solar flares, and quite possibly knock out communications and electronics on the planet. Along with that, there will likely be upheaval. We've already noticed an increase in natural disasters on the planet....ie// tsunamis, floods, hurricane strengths and the like. Yes, it will be a very volatile time, but I think it more of a transformation. I believe that there will be some loss of life due to extremes in areas of the planet. But I do not believe that this is the so called "end" of the planet and our total existence. Life has been through some pretty erratic changes....from primordial goo, to the time of the dinosaurs, but each time the planet has survived, and rebuilt itself. I believe the human spirit is insatiable. We will find a way to live on.
prosperity66 says:
Catholic by reason of fact but not by reason of faith, here's a summary of my opinion: I stronly believe that if God would exist, there would be no poverty, no hatred, no war on earth. I've studied Nostradamus predictions and none of them - unless it's interpreted AFTER the event happened - became reality. Nobody's able to say when and even if the world will come to an end. And after the 2008 crisis, the ultra-liberals proved they learned nothing except their own interest so, here again, I seriously doubt the world as we know it today would change in only three short years. However, you built a very good lens :)
nica08 says:
Only God knows, no one can predict, only the creator.
WindyWinters says:
No one can predit the future. Live for today; not tomorrow!
    You did a mighty job in your research of these cultures. My research, however, shows that most of the bible is a conglomeration of more ancient tales taken from Persia, Egypt and Assyria. The Maya probably migrated from this region as their icons, pyramids and mortuary practices are very similar to Egypt. It is not surprising, therefore, that the same stories have surfaced in several places. But we are coming to the end of something which is unstoppable. 5* fave and lens rolled to Killing the World and Save Planet Earth
