Severe Weather Phobia

Being terrified of severe weather is a real phobia!

Are you scared of storms? Not me! But many people are terrified... I have always loved thunder storms. Ever since I was a little kid I remember peering out the window to watch the storm. I love the clouds, the clapping and rumbling of the thunder, the sound of the pounding rain, the beautiful lightning and howling wind. I did have a storm a few years ago that caused major damage in my neighborhood so I do take the warnings more seriously now as a result. Also once I became a mother I have to put my curious nature on the back burner as I ensure that my family is tucked away in the basement. I first made a lens about severe weather so I thought it was appropriate to create this lens about severe weather phobia to compliment my first one on severe weather.

The things that fascinate me about about storms have been found to be disabling to many people. This fear has only recently been given a name--it is called severe weather phobia or severe storm phobia. Doctors indicate that most often a person has experienced a severe weather event to create a severe weather phobia. Many people, with this severe weather phobia, will begin to monitor approaching storms days in advance and use many different mediums to do their monitoring. Some people can become completely disabled by even the threat of severe weather.

My local television station ran a two part story about severe weather phobia that I found fascinating. I have included the links to the story below.

Please leave your thoughts or stories in the comments area at the bottom. Comment about sever weather phobia that you or a loved one might be experiencing or storm related story.

Yes

KH says:

Yes, I have lilapsophobia. I live in Oklahoma near Joplin, MO, and after the bad tornadoes this spring I became very severely phobic. I tried to treat myself with exposure therapy but apparently pushed myself too hard. I'm in desensitization therapy right now. It is definitely helping.

ionee_25 says:

I'm scared of lightning, thunders, and heavy rains. Not for myself but for my family. I just feel that way and every time a typhoon is coming.

kiwinana71 says:

Mine is Heavy rain warmings - because I live beside a river, cannot watch the river rising in heavy rain, the blinds are closed and if it is in the day time I spend my time in my little corner of the room on my computer, and try not to think of the rain

blackspanielgallery says:

My dog does. Her picture is my logo, but she fears weather even though she is inside.

Pastiche says:

I'm a weather fanatic - like you, I find storms exciting and fascinating. I've experienced hurricanes, blizzards, heavy thunderstorms and torrential rainstorms but never a genuine tornado. Those would scare me for sure. My mother is terrified of windy weather and thunderstorms; she sits in the basement stairway until they pass by. I never knew it until recent years. She kept her phobia well under control as we kids grew up - none of us has storm fear whatsoever.

Sami says:

Im Terrified Of Thunder Storms. I Have To Keep Watching And Watching The Radar. I Always Check Outside Every Five Seconds Pretty Much. I Jump Or Plug My Ear At High Sounds Like Thunder. And If I Seen Any Clouds That Look Like Tornados, I Freak. If The Storms Get Really Bad I Ususally Get Real Shaky, Pale, And Sometimes I Start Crying. I Dont Know But Ever Since I Was A Baby I Have Been Terrified Of Storms.

poddys says:

My Mom used to be terrified of thunderstorms. It comes from cycling home from work through the country lanes when she was about 18 in torrential rain, and a thunderbolt dropped in a field close to her and fried some cows. She was petrified ever since.

rlmodranski says:

I used to be terrified of storms. However, when my oldest was about four, in order to keep from passing my fear along to her, we promised to never be afraid of thunder and lightning until it was louder than B-52's flying over our house (my husband was military). It really worked. I'm still not crazy about big storms, but I don't become irrational anymore!

Lynne Modranski

No

beerhead says:

I have always loved storm's.Awesome lens.

JessK says:

I used to be terrified of lightning. When I finally decided to face my fear, I was fascinated. Now, every time it starts to lightning, I grab my camera. I can sit for hours taking photos of the storm clouds and lightning. Although... I am still terrified of tornadoes.

kansasww says:

I do not fear severe weather, but living in Kansas I have learned a healthy respect for it.

EFTcuresPhobias says:

I used to be terrified of thunderstorms but not so much anymore!
Great lens, lots of useful information :)

nickupton says:

No but I once had a student who used "being allergic to weather" as an excuse not to go on a field trip.

skiesgreen says:

Generally I use logic to overcome possible consequences of things so I don't have phobias about them. But am worried about the increasing weather chaos due to climate change

azpoppy says:

The only severe weather I have encountered is storm weather with thunder and lightning. I grew up in southern Arizona and we have a monsoon season with flash storms and torrential rain and lightning. I love it. I miss the thunderstorms. Now, tornadoes kind of squick me out, so I don't think I would ever consider moving to storm alley for that reason. ::shudder::

WendyKrick says:

No, but I just watched "Marley and Me" and boy was he scared of thunder storms.

What an interesting lens! I wouldn't say I have a phobia of storms (I don't get the symtoms you mentioned above), but I don't like them and I find thunder and lightening scary. Great lens! Blessed. :)

I suffer from this severe weather phobia, mainly when it's a severe thunderstorm.
Last year, in August, my family and I lived next door to my grandmother. We had been over there and walked back to our house before the weather got too serious. Well, I forgot my games and my mom forgot her charger, so I went back to get it. My grandma was asleep so I decided to walk back home.
I got about half way to my house when a large clap of thunder and a rather bright (and scary) flash of lightning lit up the sky, right above my head. I ran back to my house and found the front door locked. Luckily my mom was in the living room and unlocked it and let me is. She didn't know that I had gone back outside. Now, every time I hear thunder or see lightning, I become scared and have a mini panic attack. I'm slightly worried about this because I'm only 16, and I live in Oklahoma....the middle of Tornado Alley. Is there anything I can do to help with this?
