Secret Suffering: Helping women cope with sexual and pelvic pain

Ranked #132,438 in Healthy Living, #1,273,698 overall

Susan Bilheimer and Dr. Robert J. Echenberg have created a resource site, community blog, and books/other resources to help them cope with the devastating conditions that comprise sexual and pelvic pain. Our book "Secret Suffering - Women's Sexual and Pelvic Pain and Its Effect on Their Relationships" will be coming out in the Spring of 2009.

Our mission is to bring this subject to the forefront of the public and the medical community so doctors will take women who have chronic pelvic pain seriously and women will feel validated in their suffering. We hope to help women find the medical care they so desperately need and deserve, as well as educating them in ways they can help themselves.

Many women suffer from conditions that cause sexual & pelvic pain

ANYONE WHO SUFFERS FROM CHRONIC PELVIC AND SEXUAL PAIN

Chronic pelvic pain encompasses not only syndromes and conditions from the waist to mid-thigh, but new pain research has found linkage between auto-immune disorders, such as fibromyalgia, with pelvic pain conditions. Many experts now send their chronic sexual or pelvic pain patients to pelvic floor physical therapists to work on the fascia, or connective tissues.

Some conditions, such as adhesions and endometriosis, may not even truly be the cause of the discomfort, to which many women who have been treated and still suffer excruciating pelvic pain will attest. Just a few symptoms and disorders associated with chronic pelvic and sexual pain are dyspareunia, painful intercourse, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel, lichen sclerosis, myofascial pain, ovarian cyst, painful bladder syndrome, pelvic floor dysfunction, psoas muscle spasm, pudendal nerve neuralgia, vaginismus, vestibulitis, vulvar vestibulitis, vulvodynia.

But pain research is beginning to show us that this is just the tip of the iceberg regarding pelvic and sexual pain. We are beginning to learn how nerve memory from trauma (accidents, sports, abuse, etc.) can lay in wait for years and suddenly trigger misfiring in the pelvic area.

All of these conditions cause various degrees of Chronic Pelvic Pain and can be extremely difficult to cope with on a daily basis. Many women feel alone and alienated due to the fact that chronic sexual and pelvic pain is a sensitive subject to speak out about. www.secretsuffering.com provides Chronic Pelvic Pain patients with the opportunity to write about their struggles in their "Healing Room" Blog, find informational articles, interviews, and books in their online resource section, and opportunities to meet other CPP patients going through the same hardships.

Although having CPP can be devastating to the patient it is also very difficult for the patient's loved ones. The pain caused by suffering secretly can affect all parties involved.
