There is much controversy and misinformation about who first invented the bra. Many credit Mary P. Jacob with the invention of the bra because she used the name 'Brassiere' in her patent application and a company that bought the rights to her patent later developed something like the modern day bra. However, her invention looked nothing like a modern day bra and was not designed to function like a bra. It was simply designed to be worn with and cover a corset. Olivia Flynt in 1876 envisioned and invented the modern day bra and deserves to be credited as the inventor of the modern day bra.
