Shabby chic furniture - what does it mean?

Shabby chic furniture is not only shabby, but also chic. Do you know what I mean? Ageing with style and grace. These are not depressingly wrecked things, but things that have retained their soul that we or others have breathed new life into. Perhaps we've added a paint effect or new (but often 'old'!) fabric, sometimes it's just seeing the beauty that others have missed.

Sourcing shabby chic furniture can become an obsession. We cannot pass a yard sale , a junk shop or a skip (!) without taking a peek. The sight of a perfect piece brings a sigh of satisfaction. We carry home our treasure and work out how to bring it back to life in all it's shabby glory.

Shabby chic is a whole house style, it may just start with a few touches but soon it spreads. We stop being satisfied with vases and soft furnishings and move on to the hard stuff! The odd chair or and cupboard leads on to tables, even couches and we are hooked!

But there is nothing wrong with that :-) The end product is a house filled with beautiful things that give us more pleasure than anything bought straight off the shelf and if some of us overfill our houses then often we find others happy to buy our excess creations.

O,h but how can we stand to part with them? It's easy, for the true addict the satisfaction comes from the finding and the transformation.  Then we move on and we simply need the room to continue to feed our addiction!

If you are new to all of this, then I hope to provide some tips to get you started. If you are an old hand, welcome :-)

I find that scouring flea markets and yard sales for potential shabby chic treasures is one of the most enjoyable, rewarding hobbies I've ever had. My challenge is to keep from letting it become and obsession. But I guess if I have to be obsessed this is a good one to have. LOL!
