A Visit to Shakamak State Park

Shakamak State Park lies in southwestern Indiana. It includes 1,766 acres of land including three lakes: Lake Lenape, Lake Shakamak, and Lake Kickapoo. If offers a number of outdoor recreational opportunities including hiking, horse back riding, boating, camping, and fishing.

If you've never been to Shakamak State Park, this page will provide you with information you may want to know as well as a photo tour of the area. All of the photos were taken on April 22, 2010.

The name of the park, as well as the lakes, clearly come from the Indians who lived in the area. The land was later controlled by European settlers who farmed, operated mills, and mined coal. In fact, hikers can find evidence of the old mines along Trail 2.

More About Shakamak

Shakamak has no inn but it does offer camping, a group camp, and cabins for rent. One of the cabins is pictured below. Cabins and camp sites can be reserved by going to here.

There are also bridle trails. Horses are available at the sadle barn not far from the front gate of the park.

With lakes occupying over 400 acres of land, boating is certainly popular within the park. Visitors can launch their own boat of course or rent one at the park.

Hiking Trails at Shakamak State Park

Shakamak features over 8.5 miles of hiking trails as well as a path leading from the Gate House to Lake Shakamak which provides easy access to the trails.

Trail 1 is the longest hiking trail in the park at 3.95 miles. Like all trails at Shakamak, it is moderately rugged. The trail loops around Lake Shakamak, following the fingerlike shoreline closely. It can easily be picked up near the boat ramp at the Lake. The trail bed is primarily dirt and there are many tree roots to step over so attention has to be paid to avoid falls.
Trail 2 which is 1.5 miles long can be picked up and terminated along trail 1. It takes hikers through the woods, passing an old coal mine, and encircling some cabins and the Youth Tent Area. It's moderately rolling and well sheltered from any sun and wind. My favorite portions of the trail pass through pine forest.

Trail 3, which is a 1.4 mile long loop trail starts and ends near the Saddle Barn. Trail 4 is reached via the boat ramp or campground areas along Lake Lenapee. Hikers also have the option of picking it up from trail 3. It is 1.6 miles long. This trail features quite a few steps/stairs to climb, some nice lake views, and a bit of pine as well as hardwood forest. At the campground, hikers can cross the parking lot to go out onto the fishing pier.
