Shanghai Food

Ranked #387 in Food & Cooking, #7,503 overall

Shanghai caterine has a mix of the old tradictional food and some new items. When you come to eat in Shanghai you can expect to see most of the foods on the menu's today.

There are various types such as steamed, boiled, fried and baked. Take your time to get to know them.

Xiao Long Bao (little Dragon Bun)

The little dragon bun is one of my favourite dish.

Unlike the buns in northern China, these buns are small and easy to eat. The buns are often steamed in containers made of banboo. The skin of the buns are quite thin and the bun is very juicy. The dish is now very common and consumed widely throughout China.

Chou Dou Fu (Smelly Tofu)

The smelly tofu is a popular food mostly found on Shanghai streets. The tofu is fermanted with many ingredients before its fried. Old ladies usually serve them on their liltte trolley. Most foreigners love it after tasting it despite its strong smell, Its also really cheap too!

Da Zha Xie (Hairy Crab)

Da Zha Xie is a unique type of crab found in rivers, and is normally consumed in the winter. The crabs are tied up with ropes or strings then placed in bamboo containers, steam cooked and served. There is no artificial ingredients needed, the dish tastes great as it is.

Da Zha Xie is sometimes consumed with vinegar. Local people are also quite fussy about when to consume male crabs and when to consume female crabs.

Pi Dan (Preserved Eggs)

Duck eggs are a traditional Shanghainese delicacy thats consumed frequently. Its also commonly known as 1000 year old egg. The Duck eggs are rarely more than 100 days old. It is cooked using a traditional method. Pi dan is now very common in China, and is occasionally consumed with conge.

I don't know many people who like the taste of smelly dofu. And ancient eggs don't taste very good either. But I love the Shanghai dumplings.YUM!
