Here is the thing. Golfer want to hit the ball FAR. Hence the shankapotomus reference.
Them- "I can reach the green with a 9 iron"
me- "but you are 165 out why try?"

Ah hell, GO FOR IT! I will take a six iron easy or a seven straight. He will swing for the fence and the harder you swing, the less likely you are to make good contact. So he topped the crap out of it and it went left no where near the green.

So I go on letting them hit the ball a mile each stroke. Who needs a driver on a hole that is 360 or less? Really? Put the damn thing away. Get a club that goes 180-200 yards with an easy swing. One that is more accurate! Then when you are 160-170 away IN THE MIDDLE you have a way better chance at scoring well. Instead of a drive that is in the woods, a search party for it or a drop. If you find it you try some miracle shot out of the crap like you are Phil or something. KNOCK.... bounce... you hit another tree. Now you are further back...
TAKE THE IRON SHOT OFF THE TEE!!! Let the EGO go. Let the other guy use the EGO

Par 5 480 yards

6-7-8
6 iron off the tee 180 yards.... nice shot. It's not long but it IS in the fairway
7 iron second shot. Go for the green with a wood? Are you stupid? You couldn't get there with a rocket launcher! It's 300 yards.
Take that 7 iron and hit the ball some odd distance in the direction of the green. Probably 155-160.
8 iron third shot from 140. ( I am sure your partner tried some long ball garbage and is NOT in good shape) Go for the front of the green because you know you can't stop the ball. You should be on the green and safe. Maybe close, maybe far. You have a birdie putt no matter how long it may be.

You may change the 678 depending on the distance but it works for me. I par most reasonable par 5s with THIS method.
Oh, and it drive the people I play with crazy. They get up to the tee box on that looooong par 5 and grab that big driver so fast...
I love the looks when I pull out a 4,5 or 6 iron. What am I thinking??? I am thinking par is a GREAT score.
