Obesity/Overweight - The modern scurge
"Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with more than 1 billion adults overweight - at least 300 million of them clinically obese - and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability. Often coexisting in developing countries with under-nutrition, obesity is a complex condition, with serious social and psychological dimensions, affecting virtually all ages and socioeconomic groups.....
Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. The health consequences range from increased risk of premature death, to serious chronic conditions that reduce the overall quality of life. Of especial concern is the increasing incidence of child obesity." World Health Organisation
The sad part is that the epidemic is largely self-inflicted - the factors involved are largely under human control. I will be using this Lens to explore some of the issues and offer solutions, for people who wish to take a pro-active stance.

Latest Update
My personal progess
Its been a while since I posed an update on my progress/status. I guess that it mainly because earlier in the year I achieved the results I was looking for so concerns about shaping up and weight loss have been in the background and I have been effectively running in maintenance mode and been much more relaxed about what I eat.
However today I bit the bullet and did a Body Composition analysis first time foe four months. I though the results were well worth publishing. So here they are -
Month__Weight KG__Body Fat%__Body Water %__Muscle Mass Kg_Bone Mass Kg__BMR Kj
June____82.9________29.3________47.3__________55.7__________2.9__________7135
Oct_____82.7________28.1________47.9__________56.5__________3.0__________7213
So just on the twice daily OSOLEAN and without undue diet concerns my body analysis has improved in all but one area (Visceral Fat constant at 16%), over the last four months. What a fantastic and rewarding result. I'm chuffed!!!!
My Experience with OSOLEAN

Taken at 15 weeks.

Photo prompted by Ray Robins 6 Pack - demo. Don't think I could ever emulate his results. But the he started from 48 inch, where I was a 42 (a bit on the tight side).
The Growing War Between Modern Medicine and the Public
- The Growing War Between Modern Medicine and the Public
- Europeans visiting America are shocked to see so many overweight Americans. Never do Americans realize, unlike other nations, they are being intentionally bred to overeat. The medical profession does little to stop this, treating all dietary-related diseases as if they are drug deficiencies.
Processed foods are adulterated with taste stimulants and other ingredients that create more hunger by raising insulin resistance. Insulin that can't enter cells to produce energy, disengages satiation. This is one way food producers increase their sales, by getting Americans to eat more food.
The government is complicit in spawning the diabesity epidemic by subsidizing the production of non-nutrient-dense foods and high-fructose corn syrup, and promoting a "food pyramid" that suggests Americans consume more food, not less (17-23 servings a day), and many servings of meat, processed gains and dairy products which foster obesity.
Overweight/Obesity Statistics
Its appropriate to start by defining Overweight and Obesity.Overweight is a condition of increased body weight compared to established standards. The weight may result from bone, fat, muscle, and/or water. Defined objectively as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25-29.9. ...
Obesity is a disease in which excess body fat has accumulated to such an extent that health may be negatively affected. It is commonly defined as a body mass index (weight divided by height squared) of 30 kg/m2 or higher. ...

The prevalence of overweight and obesity in Australia is increasing. Recent studies estimate that more than half of all Australian women (52%) and two-thirds of men (67%) are overweight or obese. That is, almost 60% of the adult population in Australia is overweight or obese.
Over the last 20 years, obesity rates in children have risen greatly in many countries around the world - what can be referred to as an internal epidemic of childhood obesity. Rates of childhood obesity in Australia are at one of the highest amongst developed nations. 25% of Australian children are currently overweight or obese, a huge jump from 5% in the 1960s.

Social Consequences
The New Era of Discrimination.
"The effects of obesity and poor health go far beyond a person's mere appearance. In our new millennium we have replaced racial and gender discrimination with a new kind of discrimination based on a person's weight and appearance. Whereas in the past poverty was associated with thinness and obesity with wealth, most people who are overweight today occupy the lower rungs of the economic ladder. Rich fat man has become an oxymoron, and poor and fat have become synonymous.
Incredibly, despite the fact that we are enjoying the greatest economic prosperity ever known to humankind, 61 percent of the U.S. population is overweight, and a staggering 27 percent are clinically obese. Both of these figures increased 10 percent in just five years (from 1994 to 1999), and obesity has almost doubled since the 1970s.
Weight and appearance now define social and economic opportunities just as family name and birth did in the nineteenth century. When a person is fat-not just 15 pounds overweight, but clinically obese-it is hard to find a job, a relationship, or the energy to stay on top of the everyday demands of even a simple life.
Even most people of normal weight are unhealthy, although they often don't know it. Modern medicine tells them to accept headaches, stomach distress, body pain, fatigue, arthritis, and thousands of other common ailments as inevitable symptoms that afflict an aging population. Yet these ailments, like being overweight and obesity, are the direct result of a terrible diet."
Addendum there are statistical studies for the USA which show a significant relationship between income and obesity. But interestingly the difference is narrowing, I guess even the more affluent can't insulate themselves from the environmental challenges. Looks as though in the future only the pro-active and people lucky with their genes will avoid the overweight problem.
So whats wrong with being overweight.
In adition to the discrimination mentioned in the introduction
* diabetes
* coronary heart disease
* high blood cholesterol
* stroke
* hypertension
* gallbladder disease
* osteoarthritis (degeneration of cartilage and bone of joints)
* sleep apnea and other breathing problems
* some forms of cancer (breast, colorectal, endometrial, and kidney)
Obesity is also associated with:
* complications of pregnancy
* menstrual irregularities
* hirsutism (presence of excess body and facial hair)
* stress incontinence (urine leakage caused by weak pelvic floor muscles)
* psychological disorders, such as depression
* increased surgical risk
* increased mortality
Being overweight has a range of implications, including --
Your quality of life may suffer
Your self-esteem can be affected
You may not be happy with how you look
You may lack energy
You age faster
You don't feel good
What are the reasons for this new epidemic
The consequence of Modern Lifestyle
To quote the WHO -
"The rising epidemic reflects the profound changes in society and in behavioural patterns of communities over recent decades. While genes are important in determining a person's susceptibility to weight gain, energy balance is determined by calorie intake and physical activity. Thus societal changes and worldwide nutrition transition are driving the obesity epidemic. Economic growth, modernization, urbanization and globalization of food markets are just some of the forces thought to underlie the epidemic.
As incomes rise and populations become more urban, diets high in complex carbohydrates give way to more varied diets with a higher proportion of fats, saturated fats and sugars. At the same time, large shifts towards less physically demanding work have been observed worldwide. Moves towards less physical activity are also found in the increasing use of automated transport, technology in the home, and more passive leisure pursuits."
It is important to recognise (especially in the US) there is more than one lifestyle and in relation to obesity it can be inferred that there are two prominent lifestyles.
One embracing the Pro-active or Wellness (maybe related to affluent) culture the other
Represented by the run of-the-mill culture.
There is no need to deal with the first group of Wellness followers, they have the message and are taking control of their lives with exercise programs and the preparation and consumption of healthy foods, more on this later.
But for the rest of the population, the situation is more grim.
The first issue is clear - we generally live a far more sedentary life than in the past. Work now tends to be less physically demanding and labour saving devices round the home and garden reduce the physical demands of domestic life. Almost universal use of the car, for most travel and passive entertainment complete the picture.
On the diet front over the years pre packed and convenience foods have become common amongst our second group of people. Foods with diminishing levels of nutrition but with increasing sugar content. Foods designed and packaged to be moreish.
The results increasing (excessive) consumption of foods of low nutritional value have become the norm. This not only seriously impacts their health but also results in them becoming either overweight or obese.
It also seems clear that people are getting conflicting and just straight out bad advice on their diet - if fact following the recommendation (lox fat, lo Hi Carbo etc etc) are really a significant factor in the resulting weight situation.
The effects are clearly visible the impact on their quality-of-life and prospects follow.
How to take control:
Its not hard - but it does require some lifesyle changes.
Go for a walk with your partner, kids or the dog
Kick a footy around the back yard
Ride your bike
Take the stairs instead of the lift
Go for a swim
Park at the far end of the carpark
Second change your diet.
I suggest that you at the least bypass packaged foods, cakes, chocolate and the like. Start planning your diet based on the New Food Pyramid shown below. Concentrate of using mainly fresh produce - in season local produce rather then imported foods.
Of course cut out snacking and keep the portion sizes down and chose Low GI Carbohydrates - see below..
New Food Pyramid
Revision to the Recommended Food Pyramid

This is the new food pyramid and shows a number of changes from the one you might be used to. To use this pyramid consume mainly from the items at the base of the pyramid and sparingly from those at the top. Buy your fruit and veg locally - organic if possible the local Farmers Market is a good place to shop.
Suggest that you choose Rye bread over wholegrain and Full-Cream mike (non- homogenised). Use Olive Oil and fit in some fish Oil for the Omega 3's.
Note that daily vitamin & mineral supplementation is recommended for most people.
Low Glycemic Index Foods/Diet
- www.glycemicindex.com/
- Not all carbohydrate foods are created equal, in fact they behave quite differently in our bodies. The glycemic index or GI describes this difference by ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on our blood glucose levels. Choosing low GI carbs - the ones that produce only small fluctuations in our blood glucose and insulin levels - is the secret to long-term health reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes and is the key to sustainable weight loss.
Diets Good and Bad
The search for the elusive solution
Some issues being -
1. having to weigh your food
2. Need to keep track of points
3. Eat mostly rabbit food
4. Be hungry
5. Buy specially prepared meals
6. Cook special meals just for yourself
Such issues tend to favour people dropping off the program eventually and reverting to their original diet. Unfortunately in 'typical weight loss programs, people lose-
Bone density
Fluid
Muscle and lean tissue
So that at the end of the diet cycle they are back, probably weighing more than when they started and having a body in a poorer shape - to cope with the next attempt. Hence the maxim - "Diet and gain Weight".
That's the bad news - now here is the good.
There is a new system just on the market based on Peptide technology which breaks the mould. Unlike most other diets where Lean muscle and fat are lost equally this new technology radically changes this ratio, so that its mainly fat which is lost resulting in a trimmer body.

My Personal Path
Shaping Up for 2009
I guess through my life I have always tended to be overweight, in recent years (decades) as my physical activity levels have declined, without a commensurate reduction in calorie input my weight has climbed - up to the point of technical obesity BMI over 30.I have not made much in the way of serious attempts to remedy the situation, although over the years have tried the low carbohydrate diet (this did work, but was of questionable merit health wise and was difficult, in practice, to sustain). Desultory sessions at the Gym , really no fun at all, can't see what people see in it.
Over the last few years I have loosely followed a low GI diet and this has at least stabilised my weight at the threshold of obesity, that's something but not really a situation to be proud of.
So it is with some interest that I approached the new Peptide diet plan. At this point (last days of 2008), I have been on the plan for around 3 weeks, over the Christmas period, not the best time to start a fat loss program.
I'm including an unflattering photo on me taken, for the record, before starting the Peptide program.
My initial reaction is that the plan is totally simple and it works. Two drinks a day, before meals - its simple to do - no reason not to be able to do that indefinitely.
Shaping up is happening - noticeably eating less, cakes, chocolate, deserts out, portion sizes down, not a problem. I even have the feeling that I shall break even on the cost involved, its not hard to save the $4 per day cost by cutting out sweet stuff and eating smaller portions.
I will try to chart my results for he next few months.
