LCD TVs are extremely popular with consumers. They provide superb viewing and sizes from under 19 inches to 65 inches.

Terms to Know When Shopping for LCD TVs 

When shopping for a Sharp LCD TV or any other LCD television there are a few terms you should know.

  • DVI and HDMI inputs

    DVI is a digital visual interface and HDMI is a high-definition multimedia interface both of which carry uncompressed digital video data. DVI supports digital video and HDMI supports both digital video and audio and is therefore the preferred input for HDTV.

  • HDTV or High Definition TV

    HDTV is one form of digital television which provides the highest picture resolution. The high definition picture is created by an increased number of pixels, thus the more pixels the higher the resolution. High definition television resolution is 480i, 480p, 720i, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The "i" means that the signal is displayed on the screen "interlaced" and the "p" means that it is displayed by progressive scan. Progressive scan is recognized as providing a superior picture, thus 1080p provides a better picture than a 480i.

  • TFT

    TFT stands for "Thin Film Transistor" and is the LCD technology that provides the highest quality picture.

    • Advantages of LCD TVs 

    There are a number of benefits to choosing an LCD television:

  • They're capable of providing an extremely clear, sharp, bright picture.

  • An LCD can also offer a larger screen than a traditional tube TV due to it's thin profile. For this same reason it occupies much less space than a CRT TV.

  • An LCD television provides a wide viewing angle, around 160 degrees which provides good viewing from nearly any seat in the room.

  • The lifespan of an LCD TV is estimated to be 60,000 to 80,000 hours. This should translate into 20 to 30 years depending upon use.

  • An LCD TV does not experience burn in of images when they are left static on the screen for long periods of time.

  • LCD televisions are more energy efficient that plasma TVs.

  • An LCD television provides a better picture than a plasma screen in rooms with bright light.

    • Disadvantages of LCD TVs 

    There are a few minor drawbacks to LCD TVs as compared to others.

  • The florescent light source of an LCD display can dim as it ages creating an imbalance in the colors displayed. The bulbs on some TVs can be replaced but on others it cannot. The most common defect for an LCD display is dead pixels.

  • LCD TVs do not track motion as well as a Plasma or a traditional CRT TV. Thus fast moving objects can appear to lag or blur. This effect is lessening as LCD technology/manufacturing processes mature.

    • What Size Widescreen TV Do You Need? 

    A high resolution, high definition screen looks better up close than a traditional tube television. Thus you can sit closer to the television without any loss of viewing quality.

    The size TV screen you want will depend on whether the TV is 4:3 aspect ratio or 16:9 (widescreen) and the distance you will be sitting from it. CNET has a great article that includes a table to help in calculating the right TV size for your room.

    The Latest Cool Stuff from Sharp
