Help! My Homes Decor Needs Updating... And I am on a budget!
By Sharon Stajda,
There are are many styles of older homes. All unique in their own special way, all attributed to architectural designs of the past. Should we always strip away older homes uniqueness? Design elements that once made the home not only an attractive place to live, but a home that was well sought after by the general home owner? Taking into account "what goes around comes around". Would it be perhaps wiser to try and integrate the old with the new? Making your home a place that continues to maintain a uniqueness of its own. Older homes have special challenges and many times, you'll hear that you can't do this or that. I beg to differ, with a little imagination, and a bit of work, you can revamp an old home, along with all its old out dated structural components.
Updating Old Wood Paneling...
What to do with paneling, update it.... The truth is that you can paint paneling. Old paneling can easily be brought to life, and updated. But it has to be done right. First, it is important to clean it thoroughly. A good household cleaner can as a rule suffice. Next, scuff lightly with sandpaper and wipe away the dust with a clean damp cloth. Make sure no dust remains. It is now time to apply a good primer. Make sure your primer has no drips. Put it on lightly, remember, it's just a primer, and not intended to totally cover what's under it. Make sure it has ample time to dry. When dry, its time to apply your desired paint color. It will take two coats, so don't freak out at the results of your first coat.
Did you know you can wallpapper over paneling? Well you can...
You will be very surprised at the beautiful walls you have created, where that old outdated paneling once resided.
Dealing with wallpapper
Wallpaper, some love it some loath it. Wallpaper was once revered as a real status symbol. Only homes of the most wealthy possessed the wonderful patterned walls.
There are a couple solutions for dealing with wallpaper. You hate it, and just want it gone. Remove it. There are great products sold at your local hardware store that will do the job. Again as in painting paneling, you have to do it right. Follow the directions on the label of what ever product you purchase. Do not become worried if the first application does not bring great results. Repeat application, as a rule it works like a charm with two applications. I will warn you, if you have several layers, you will repeat applications three to four times.
You can also paint certain types of wallpaper. Test a small corner of the wallpaper to see how it stands up to primer, and paint. When the test spot dries, if the wallpaper is still intact, go for it and prime and paint the rest of the wall. Another suggestion, make it your own piece of art work. Add to the pattern, by using your own imagination, and acrylic paints and small brush. The paper will be one of a kind. You don't have the flair to for hand paint. Use stencils and or stampers.
Dealing with outdated tile?
What about tile, can it be updated? Yes ! Don't like the color, the grout is old and discolored? There are special paint products available for painting tile. Again, the first and most important step is prep work. Closely follow the instructions on the product you have chosen. Also, be sure to choose moisture resistant and mold or mildew resistant paint for damp areas such as kitchens and baths.
You like the older tile but the grout is so dirty... Paint it, it takes a bit of time, but you will love the results.
To paint grout, chose your color paint. Mix paint 2/3 paint to 1/3 water. The grout will soak in the thinner consistency paint, like a sponge. If your grout has a sealer over it, such as polyurethane, sand the grout until water will soak into it.
In closing, you might be surprised with just a little sand paper, paint, and imagination you can make your older home one of a kind.
Lets Cool It Down For Summer...
Tips on decorating for warm climates or summer months
Do you come indoors to cool down, but don't quite feel
cool and comfortable, even though the air conditioner
is on? The room feels stuffy, and you just can't seem to get comfortable? The way our homes are decorated makes a definite difference in the comfort we perceive
(instead of actually experience).
A light touch in decorating makes a room feel cooler
and more comfortable during hot weather and that will
help you cool down, and feel comfortable in your home on the hottest summer day.
How, exactly, to cool down your decor. It is relatively easy. It won't cost an arm or a leg either.
First get rid of all the soft, cuddly, warm looking items that you love during the winter, but all add up to give a stuffy feeling in the summer months. Such item's as throws and pillows, the pine cones from Christmas.... Start your cool down by adding cool cotton or linen fabrics pillows in lighter neutral colors. Fresh summer flowers or wonderful green plants always add a touch of coolness to a room.
A fun pillow project to cool off your winter pillows. Try wrapping your existing pillow's with a linen or silk scarf as if you were wrapping a gift. Use safety pins or tack with a needle and thread wherever you would put a piece of tape on a package. It's an easy way to make a change without the trouble and expense of buying pillows for each season of the year. Besides , it's a great way to recycle older scarfs that just sit in the drawer.
Light colors are always better for summer time. Put away or cover gray or brown toned furniture. Furniture covers have come a long way since the days of cheaply knitted polyester throws with foam backing. You can buy covers that will fit your furniture snugly and stay in place, and look fabulous!. Look for covers made of firmly woven fabric in the style that fits your furniture, make sure to choose the lighter, softer colors. The softer tones are very relaxing.
Roll up the heavy wool rug! If you have hard surface floors,
flaunt them now. They're cooler and easier to clean of
beach sand, garden dirt and other summer grunge.
Do away with clutter. Remove some of the nicknacks, and yes photo's. Clutter spells dust, dust spells----stuffiness. Replace a photo with a plant or perhaps some sea shells in a great tray or glass bowl.
Get your drapes open, bring in the long awaited sun light. Take a little time clean your windows. Clean windows makes all the difference, when trying to bring in a sunny summer day , minus the heat.
Bottom line? Opt for soft light hues, and clean shiny
surfaces, adorn with greenery or organic decorator accent's. You will soon find yourself enjoying a hot summer day, in a cool relaxing atmosphere. An atmosphere that was created with a little imagination, just a bit of work, and very little out of pocket expense.
Lets Warm Up That Decor ...
Tips on decorating for cold climates or winter months
Summer its on the way out--- The cool autumn winds along with the beautiful colored leaves falling may start you yearning for a cozier warmer decor. Plus we all know how quickly fall will turn into winter, with it cold and snowy forecast. Yes it is definitely time to warm the place up...
Early fall is a the perfect time to start warming up your homes decor. With the holidays pending, and all the added hoopla that accompanies them, its wise to get started early. You might be surprised with just a few simple changes your home can become a warm and inviting atmosphere for your family and friends to enjoy.
When it comes to making a home feel warm and cozy, all homes are not created equal? With the many styles of homes our there, the newer homes with their cavernous great rooms, and vaulted ceilings are more challenging, and can pose problems, when it comes to making them feel warm and cozy.
To get started, divide the room into several smaller groupings. Using furniture groupings to make areas inviting, and geared to a given purpose. Such as an area in front of a fireplace, to sit and enjoy conversation, along with the warm fire. Another great area grouping, add a book shelve to a corner along with comfortable chair, a great space to read a good book. Perhaps an area with a small game table, and a few high backed chairs, for having a challenging game of chess. Wall color in a room can make all the difference. Darker colors tend to warm up a lager room. Wall paper with larger patterns will also make the room take on a warmer feeling. Moldings should be substantial, and a bit ornate, this will give the elusion that the ceiling is lower, and also adds a very well built sturdiness to a home.
Furniture should be large, small pieces will take on a dwarf out of place look in a large room. Use wonderful upholstered sofas and chairs, covered heavy tapestries, velvets or other heavy fabrics. When it comes to wood, I am an avocate of mixing wood tones. In a larger room if you choose to use glass tables, please make sure they are large, and incorporate ornate wood in there design. The same with the use of mirrors, make sure they have an interesting wood used in the design, and that they are again large and give the elution of heaviness. Include tall bookcases or entertainment centers. These pieces are not only useful to store electronic components, but will add charm to the room.
The larger spaces love accessories and plants. Large spaces will accommodate the wonderful lager pieces of art, along with the larger nick narks. Potted trees, and plants are also a must. When choosing plants and trees make sure to match the scale of a tall ceiling.
Another wonderful tip to make that large room take on a cozier feel. Create small room dividers. This can be done by using larger pieces, such as book shelves, screens, a grouping of plants. Experiment, you might be surprised at what elision you could create?
Let us move on to homes that are more diverse in style. Homes that have rooms that are well separated, such as living room dinning room and such. These homes are somewhat easier to deal with when it comes to making them warm and cozy for the winter months. Lets start with throw pillows, and throws. Throw pillows and throws are an instant warmer upper. Just choose fabrics such as velvets, mohair or chenille, keep in the warm in tone. Also keep in mind the colors of your furniture when choosing. Before shopping consult a color wheel. A color wheel will provide you on just the right warm tones to match your furniture. Bring in some of the fall foliage, bitter sweet, pine cones in a bowl, use your imagination. Bare dried sticks can make a statement if done up in the right vase. Stack some logs by the fireplace in an oversized basket. When using a throw, make it a show piece, thrown just right over that comfy chair. Wonderful darker texture rugs are a must. Layering rugs is also a good way to add texture and warmth to a room, also if you have a wonderful rug that you feel is more than a rug, hang it up and display it on just the right wall.
Its always great to change up drapes in the winter, darker heavy textured drapes will instance warmth. So you say your furniture is light, and just can't pull off a winter warmth with new pillows. Invest in slip covers. There are lovely slip covers out there.
If possible move that furniture around a bit. Get a chair or two closer to the fire side. Add a table with a good book, and some family photo's. What could be greater than the fire and good memories of times gone by? Decrease glare, soften up your rooms lighting, iridescent bulbs are great for this. Better yet bring in the candles. Candles in wonderful copper or brass holders will really add just the right flare, plus if the candles are a bit scented with vanilla, pine, spice, it will be oh so nice... Candles place near mirrors give a magical effect.
Having guests in for the holiday's? Want to make it a visit they won't soon forget? Pamper your holiday guests, make sure their linens and towels are fresh daily, and placed in their room. Don't forget to splash linens and towels with a bit fragrance. Add to the night stand a basket of goodies, such as hand made soap, guest shampoos, talc, use your imagination. Don't forget to add a little edible goody each night, to send them off to sleep with a little sweet treat.
As you can see it really isn't difficult to add small inexpensive touches to your home. Touches that will not only warm up the decor, but warm the hearts of everyone that lives in or visits your home.
Lets Talk Fabric Paint...
Yeh you can paint most fabric's...
Don't get rid of a great fabric chair... Paint it!Have you ever thought of spiffing up an old fabric chair -- with paint? Does your old chairs present floral pattern just not match up with the new Stuff?
Get out your paint brushes... It is so easy to paint fabric, if you can stay in the lines, you got it made.
I have had great success changing the color of those oh so fabric blooms, and you can to...
Go to you local craft store, and just have a look at all the fab colors fabric paints come in.
I have also painted my drapes, in a guest room... They now match, and I am not out the hundreds of dollars it would have cost me to replace them.
You don't have to be an artist, the paint just absorbs, and does all the work. Just paint within the lines of the pattern, and its like magic, it soaks in, and you are left with your desired color.
When trying this technique, do a sample at the underside of the piece. A place where if you don't like the results, you can abandon the project, and not see the sample area. Also keep in mind, the color you will be covering with the paint. If its a dark color your paint will show the hues of the fabric paint, but may be a bit darker.
I hope you will give fabric painting a try. I think you will be very pleased with the results...
