Ever wonder why turkey is the poultry of choice for out Thanksgiving dinner or are you just looking for some new twists on some old Thanksgiving meal recipe's? Well you stumbled into the right place... Why did the pilgrims proclaimed --Hey ! Let's eat Turkey!

By Sharon Stajda,

Ever wonder why turkey is the main dish on many's table at the Thanksgiving meal?...Actually Queen Elizabeth preferred goose over turkey ... So why did the pilgrims proclaimed --Hey ! Let's eat Turkey?

How did pumpkins become part of the Thanksgiving feast? Did the first citizens of our nation, really prefer turkey or did they prefer roast goose or lobster? I hope this lens will clear up some of the misconception's about Thanksgiving Day, and its tradition's...

In the year 1621 the Plymouth colonists, and Wampanoag Indians celebrated the very first Thanksgiving. Was the main dish turkey? Hate to break this to you, but no--- it was not. The fact is it appears the pilgrims chose foods that were popular to the Plymouth area. Foods that were most likely served would have been, lobster, goose, duck, seal, eel, and cod. All of these mentioned foods would have been very available to the pilgrims, and likely would have been chosen to celebrate the day...
Now-- not to say turkey was not served. Deer meat, and turkey most certainly would have been consumed along with all the other wonderful food item'.

So how did the turkey become so traditional to our modern-day Thanksgiving?

The One story that has been around forever, is how Queen Elizabeth of England most often chose roast goose to serve at her harvest festivals, and one such harvest meal, she was enjoying a nice fat goose, when she received the news of the Spanish Armada being sunk, on it way to attack England. The queen was very much overjoyed for such wonderful news. She proceeded to order herself a second goose -- to celebrate in a big way. This is said to be the reason goose became the favorite bird at harvest time in England.

When the Pilgrims found themselves in the new land of America. A goose was not as easy to come by, as it had been in England. The wild turkeys ran free, and were very easy to hunt. This perhaps being the reason turkeys became the bird of choice for our present day Thanksgiving meal...

Hey ! Does Turkey Really Make One Sleepy?

Does eating turkey make really make you sleepy? Here is the scoop...

In A. Word No. It's a well worn myth. For I don't know how long I have heard the warning--don't eat to much turkey, you will get yourself all tired out. The culprit that makes you sleepy is high carbohydrate intake from a big Thanksgiving meal. All the wonderful dishes you consume are as a rule very high in Carbs. The lethargy comes from your body being overloaded, making an attempt to digest all that you have eaten. The digestion process causes the brain to supply additional blood to the stomach to aid in digestion. Now I know about now your wondering about the effects of L-tryptophan? Which yes is in turkey, and yes it can cause drowsiness. But -- recent studies have shown L-tryptophan, can only cause drowsiness when consumed in a massive amount, and on an empty stomach. So stop putting the blame on the Bird... Just make sure you eat some of those vegetables, and stuffing...

Turkey Trivia... Hey Whats Thats Called?

What's that fleshy red growth at the turkey's neck?

The anatomically correct term is "wattle". When a tom is feeling amorous, the wattle and the snood become very bright red.

What that thing that hangs off the turkey's beak?

The flesh-like appendage that dangles from a turkey's forehead is called the "snood". It's very long on male turkeys and hangs down over the beak.

Answer to Poll...

The early settlers of Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts were particularly grateful to Squanto, the Native American and former British slave who taught them how to both catch eel and grow corn and also served as their native interpreter. With Squanto's assistance, the settlers were able to produce crops, and survived in the New Worlds long cold winters.

But it was "President Lincoln in 1863 that actually declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday...
