The old tours used to let you take one of the elevators down through the middle of the dam. There are actually miles of tunnels going through the dam.

And guess what! The dam leaks!!! Some water leaks into those tunnels and is channeled out on the spillway side of the dam. It's also interesting to note that the concrete in the dam is not yet fully cured, it won't be for another decade or so.

Once you've crossed Shasta Dam there are miles of fire trails and roads that can be explored. One of them follows the lake on the West side winding around and crossing over two of the arms. This is a great vantage point to check out the spillway.

Yah, it's pretty deep. In the winter it can get to 517 feet deep. It's less during the summer because the lakes primary usage is water control and irrigation for lower in the state, so the water drops a lot in the summer.

When completely full there is 365 miles of shoreline with a storage capacity of 4,550,000 acre feet

    Thanks for stopping by. :)

Excellent highlight of a most beautiful area...right here in the good ole' US of A! I have traveled the area as a child and will always remember the swimming and some of the biggest trees I've ever seen in my life! Thanks for the memories.

State Park Closures

One sad item to notes is the closing of many of the State parks near Shasta Lake. One of the most notable is Castle Craigs. I've taken the beautiful hike up to the top of these craigs many times sense I was a kid, drinking from the springs coming from the rocks as it bubbles up after it's journey from Mnt Shasta.

The view from the top of the Craig is spectacular, allowing you to view much of the Northern Valley as it climbs toward Mount Shasta and past into Oregon.

If you have plans to visit some of the State parks in the area while you are camping you might want to visit the California State Parks website to see if the park you are wanting to visit is still open.

Another sad closing in the area is Burney Falls State Park , while this is a little bit of a distance from Shasta Lake, many people visiting the area used to make the 1.5 hour trip over to view this magnificent falls.

We look forward to the future reopening of all our State Parks in the Northern California Area.
