Having Fun With Your Kid's Storage

Storage problems around the home are usually quite serious business, especially for the decor conscious. But in the baby or kid's room, you can have a bit of funs and play around with cheaper materials.

Shelves For Home Storage - Keeping a Kids Room Organized

If you have young children, then your home storage problems are likely very different from those of singles, an older couple whose children have left home, or a childless couple. You do not necessarily have to stick to your usual tastes in home décor. In a baby's room or toddler's room, you can relax and have a bit of fun. At the same time, you have to deal with how best to stack away those things that are so special to young children, most especially toys.

Even if the rest of your home is traditional, with lots of nicely varnished wood furniture, you can let your hair down a bit in the kid's room. Think of the practical aspects of what you need to store away at night (and for as much of the day as possible!), while at the same time making the bedroom where the child, or children, feel at home. In other words, think young, be young and forget the rest of the house. The kid's room is a special case.

Your approach to fitting out a child's room could be, and usually is, very different to fitting out a kitchen or dining room. The choice of shelves for home use varies greatly from room to room. Whereas you may only opt for varnished hardwoods in the dining or living rooms, you may happily consider the use of MDF (medium-density fiberboard) in your child's room. And why not? It is likely to take a battering over the years, and practicality has to have precedence over show!

There are several key aspects of a child's room that make it so different. First, your baby grows into a toddler, who grows into an older child, who sooner than you expect become a teenager. Okay, forget the teenager bit for now, but while they are under 10 years old, your rapidly growing child has similar but evolving storage needs over those years.

Toys may change, but toys there will be. Clothes may get bigger, but clothes will always need storing. You have no idea what interest the child will develop, but you can rest assured that a demand on storage space will be made by those interests.

Because of the emphasis on a growing child, shelving units and cabinets that are modular in design are a great choice. You have to choose storage units that come from a company with a track record, so that you can be sure to be able to add additional units later. Wall storage units such as those by Northcote are ideal. They are designed to be easy to install, just with a simple screwdriver. They include two basic wall units and a storage drawer, but the range includes assorted trugs, buckets and containers. These MDF units come painted white.

Strong plastic storage boxes are an important part of a child's room, especially for toys, and the modern range of boxes and containers is so extensive, you are sure to find something suitable for your child. They can come with wheels, simple styles or decorated to a theme. In fact, choosing these can be quite fun for your child to get involved in. After all, it is their room, so if the price is right, don't hesitate to let the little one at least help you choose.
