Shepard Fairey, America's Artist

Shepard Fairey's iconic Hope painting helped America to visualize change in 2008, artistically defining Barack Obama's presidential campaign.  The contemporary artist and champion of the street art scene probably never thought that his painting would become a historical image certain to be remembered for generations to come.

Since gaining the attention of the world with his HOPE paining, Fairey has experienced both acclaim, through museum shows, appearances, and critical praise, as well as criticism by those who challenge his adaptation of a copyrighted photo which inspired the piece of art.

Love him or hate him, it is certain that Shepard Fairey is one artist who the world will be talking about for years to come.

I like Shepard Fairey's work. Artists know their work will be scrutinized and criticized. He reminds me a bit of Sixties artists, and especially my all time favorites, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol.

With or without the backlash, I love Shepard Fairey's designs - I've loved them even before he became popular via the Hope poster. I didn't realize that he was only a few years older than I am and he has such an extensive body of work already! It was a pleasure learning more about him on here. (:

I wanted to stop by and thank you too for blessing my Indie Rock Love Songs lens, it's very much appreciated! (:

Apparently he used a different photo than he claimed (ie one under copyright) for the Obama painting, and TinEye (image comparison search engine) showed it...

I love Shepard Fairey's work and style. He reminds me of Keith Haring -this week even more so - apparently he got busted in Boston for alleged tagging. I'm hoping to get to the exhibit of his work there this spring. 5*, lensrolled to Sixties Art ...
