Track down candy as a detective!

I really, really like Sherlock Holmes. And Halloween is a time for fantasy, a time to face our fears and pay homage to our heroes. And what better way than to dress up as them? Well, my personal hero is Sherlock Holmes, and this year, I'm getting out the deerstalker and plaid (or possibly the frock coat and starched collar).

If you'd like to join me (please, please do. I don't want to be the only one), read on for a few ideas I've tossed around lately in regards to dressing as my favourite detective.

Personally, I like Deerstalkers...

Looks exactly like the one Jeremy Brett wore in The Boscombe Valley Mystery to me! Can't go wrong dressing like the top-of-his-class Holmes, can you?

Sherlock Holmes was pacing up and down the platform, his tall, gaunt figure made even gaunter and taller by his long gray travelling-cloak and close-fitting cloth cap. - The Boscombe Valley Mystery

You'll need a pipe...

But make it one that blows bubbles - nicotine is bad!

Sherlock Holmes Costume Detective Pipe

Okay, so it's not exactly, accurate. But everyone will recognise it (and not being recognised as the most adapted literary character ever would be embarrassing, right?)

"It is quite a three pipe problem, and I beg that you won't speak to me for fifty minutes." - The Red-Headed League

Holmes' Hunting Crop

An excellent excuse to upset people.

27" Riding Crop Braided Genuine Leather

Amazon Price: $4.00 (as of 02/23/2012)Buy Now

No-one knows why Holmes has a riding crop, but he certainly does. If you're going out as Sherlock Holmes, you ought to carry it with you.

"Ha! our party is complete," said Holmes, buttoning up his pea-jacket and taking his heavy hunting crop from the rack. - The Red-Headed League

If the young lady has a brother or a friend, he ought to lay a whip across your shoulders. By Jove!" he continued, flushing up at the sight of the bitter sneer upon the man's face, "it is not part of my duties to my client, but here's a hunting crop handy, and I think I shall just treat myself to- -" He took two swift steps to the whip, but before he could grasp it there was a wild clatter of steps upon the stairs, the heavy hall door banged, and from the window we could see Mr. James Windibank running at the top of his speed down the road. - A Case of Identity.

Looking for the Sherlock 2010 coat?

Options for Men and Women!

You've got to admit, even if you didn't love BBC's Sherlock, you've got to love the coat. If you're looking for something similar to Sherlock's coat, I've found similar (and a lot more cost-effective than the Belstaff coat he actually wears) ones here.

I do a variation on this costume nearly every year. Last year was BBC, and I'm bringing that back for an encore, having found better items, but in years past I've done many different costumes all along the same line. Never actually gone the deerstalker-and-Inverness route, though... Like the inclusion of the riding crop. (Might use it for this year's costume...)

Like you I love Sherlock Holmes and all the various books written with him or about him. I love the new BBC Sherlock. It is cast so perfectly. I admit I like the houndstooth coat and deerstalker hat even though it is more theatrical then accurate. Your lens has inspired me. I would love to go as Sherlock Holmes, but since I am five feet two and stocky I may pick up the good doctor's bag and go as Dr. Watson instead. Excellent lens.
