Wonder Woman Wasn't the Only One

We girls are constantly looking for strong, independent, dynamic heroines in our fiction, movies and television. Sometimes we find them. Sometimes we don't.

This lens is dedicated to all the Wonder Womans, Princess Leias and Supergirls.

Wonder Woman

While she's not the only sheroe out there, she might be considered the patron saint of all the heroines out there.

Created by William Moulton Marston in the 1940s, Wonder Woman first appeared All Star Comics #8 in December 1941. Since then, she has grown, evolved and became a feminist icon. So much so that when DC Comics attempted to take away Wonder Woman's superpowers and iconic uniform, Gloria Steinem went to bat for the fictional superheroine.

Currently, a Wonder Woman film is in development at Warner Brothers and the star-spangled outfit and red boots continue to be a staple of Halloween celebrations each year.

Supergirl

It's difficult to pinpoint a specific version of Supergirl as there are several. Perhaps the most popular one is Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin.

Supergirl has spawned her own comic line since her debut 1959 and a not so hot feature film starring Helen Slater.

Princess Leia

When I was little, I had a blanket. Truth be known, it was my baby blanket. It was a mix of various pastel colors, but that didn't stop me. After watching Return of the Jedi, I suddenly had the inspiration to cut up said blanket and attempt to piece together a Princess Leia costume. Sadly, it was a failed attempt, but the admiration of the character is still understandable.

Daughter of Anakin Skywalker a.k.a. Darth Vader, Princess Leia was the royalty of the planet Alderaan. One of the leaders of the Rebellion, her character was instrumental in bringing down the oppressive Empire.

She-Ra

Mention She-Ra to many little girls who were children of the 80s and their eyes will light up. Sure, they might be adults now, but most will remember wanting to be She-Ra for at least a brief period in their childhoods.

She-Ra was Mattel's answer to prompts for a more "girl friendly" fantasy line in response to He-Man's success. She-Ra and her alter ego, Princess Adora, was He-Man's twin sister. Like He-Man, she obtained superhuman strength through the use of a magic sword.
