The Wicked West: Boozers, Cruisers, Gamblers, and More

The Wicked West provides the reader with a no-nonsense accounting of the "sinful" ways of the Wild West, in an era when drinking, smoking, gambling, drugs, and prostitution were the order of the day.~Midwest Book Review

Amazon Price: $12.44 (as of 10/13/2008)

Tombstone's Treasure: Silver Mines and Golden Saloons

Monahan shares true tales about Tombstone's mining and gambling history and describes a different time and locale where wealthy businesspeople and rugged miners rubbed elbows at the bar and gambled side by side.

It is both shocking and enlightening to learn just how sophisticated Tombstone really was when the Earps, Doc Holliday, Johnny Ringo, and Curly Bill strode the boardwalks.
~Bob Boze Bell, True West magazine

Amazon Price: $11.53 (as of 10/13/2008)

Pikes Peak: Adventurers, Communities and Lifestyles (CO) (Images of America)

Captured here in almost 200 vintage images are the lives, trials, adventures, and leisures of some of the Peak's early pioneers and visitors, covering a span of almost 60 years.

Amazon Price: $19.99 (as of 10/13/2008)

Taste of Tombstone: A Hearty Helping of History

This book reveals the sophisticated atmosphere unrivaled west of New Orleans and outside San Francisco during the late 1880s. Monahans detailed history of the people, restaurants, and hotels describes life in Tombstone, where six-shooters were on most mens hips, and miner picks were a common sight.

Restaurants varied from simple fare, to exotic creations, and included trendy French cooking, along with fresh oysters. Monahan painstakingly cataloged the essence of how the West Was Won by presenting facts about real people and places that shaped the most famous town in Arizona. Included are 140 recipes from the era with actual photos.

My fascination in America during the Victorian era is as a direct result of my great great grandfather, keeping newspaper cuttings from his 3 visits to America between 1844-57. I've now transcribed them to my web site for the benefit of others. So I appreciate how rewarding it must be for you.
