Shih Tzu's have a rich history that span way back to ancient China
The Chinese called them "Lion dogs" because Shih Tzu means lion in Chinese. The ancient Chinese people were obsessed with lions, that's why for several hundred years many of the Asiatic dogs were bred to mimic the look of small lions. These lion dogs were small and bearded with round heads. They also had flat faces, short noses, large round eyes, square bodies, and short legs. Lions were very popular in the Buddhist religion. Lions were considered the sacred beasts of Buddha. And according to legend, Buddha tamed a lion and rode it. It is also said that every where Buddha went, a lion followed. In that sense, it was said that lion dogs (Shih Tzu's) followed in the foot steps of Buddha. They also believed that Shih Tzus housed the spirit of Buddha.Shih Tzus were called many names through the ages such as lion dog, holy dog, fu dog, chrysanthemum-faced dog, sleeve dog, under the table dog, Shih Tzu Kou, Lhasa Lion Dog, Lhasa Terrier, Tibetan Poodle, and shock dog.
Shih Tzus are a very interesting breed to say the lease. First and foremost, Shih Tzsus love to be around people as much as possible. They crave attention, and do not like to be left alone. You must understand that for centuries they've been bred as companion dogs. They want nothing more than to be at your side 24 hours a day. If you have the time for such a demanding personality then the Shih Tzu is the right dog for you.
If you want a dog that is a constant shadow and if you have a lot of time to stay home and play with your dog, then by all means a Shih Tzu puppy is the right dog for you. Shih Tzus are also high maintenance dogs and demand daily grooming and some exercise, not much though because Shih Tzus would much rather lounge on the couch with you relaxing and being pampered.
