Introduction

Like Judaism and Christianity, Islam was also divided into diffrent groups. The two major groups of Islam are the Shia/Shiite and Sunna/Sunnis.

I will try to explain in this lens the history of this division, the common beliefs, the diffrences, the current situation and the diffrent religious and political groups of each.

I hope it will be usefull lens and it clear any misconceptions about this issue.

Historical Overview

The start of the division

After the death of the prophet Mohammad, Muslims had to choose a "khalif "for them. The khalif will represent the head of authority.
When Imam Ali was busy mourning the Prophet, a group of Muslims gathered and elected Abu Baker as the Khalif.
Imam Ali and some of the Sahaba - the Muslims who were know for their close relation with the prophet - reminded this group of the Prophet will and what the prophet said, but they refused to listen.
This was the start of the division and the first issue; after Abu baker, came Omar bin Al khattab, and later on Ossman bins Affan. Then Imam Ali was the 4th khalif.
Shia believes that it should be Imam Ali in the first place, not because he is the cousin of the prophet, but rather because he is most qualified and it is the will of the prophet himself. Even that Imam Ali was known to be a courageous great fighter, he did not fight to get what is considered to be "his right", because he thought this will harm Islam; so he stepped back, was helping the other Khalifs - when they accept to listen to him- and was trying to spread Islam and help establishing justice and peace among the society.
In 2002, a UN report for development did call the Arab leaders to follow Imam Ali ways of governing and ruling, because he was known for his tolerance, justice and wisdom.
Anyway, this Khalif issue was the start, some people knew its Imam Ali right to be the Khalif, and others followed Abu Baker. And till now, the Sunna believes that's was the right path: Abu Baker, Omar, Ossman then Ali, while the Shia believes it should be Imam Ali and the others did not follow the Prophet orders.

New Hijri Year 1427

Today is the first day in the new hijri year, it is 1427 now.

Happy New year :D

This date has been set during the days of Khalif Omar Bin El Khatab.

Hijri, or Hijra means the migration of Prophet Mohamad (pbuh)* from Meca to the Medina.

this article from Wikipedia will explain bit about it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijri_year

Some Shia had an issue, they say that Omar Bin El Khatab did set this exact date because he knew that "Karbala" will happens in this month.

Anyway, today both Shia and Sunna mark on their calendars the 1st of Muharam as the first day of the New Hijri Year.
