The Shining Force Series

The Shining Force series is one of the most popular RPG series from the 16-bit console era. The Shining series spans over a dozen games in several genres, including dungeon exploration and action RPG.

Shining Force is a tactical RPG, with each battle is played from an overhead perspective. Unlike other strategy games, such as Advance Wars, every unit in Shining Force is unique and will stay with you throughout the game. Characters that die in battle can be revived, and as they gain experience can be promoted to a more powerful class.

Shining Force

Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention

Released: 1992
Platform: Sega MegaDrive / Genesis

Story Overview
The original Shining Force is set in the kingdom of Guadiana. The game opens with the hero, Max, training with his mentor Lord Varios. A messenger summons Lord Varios to the castle, and Max follows. The King explains the situation, and Max and his friends are given the mission of protecting the Gate of the Ancients from the army of Runefaust.

Main Characters

Max The hero of the Force and the lead character.

Luke A strong and sturdy warrior that can use an axe or a sword.

Ken A knight with good range and a strong attack.

Tao A reliable mage with some good offensive spells.

Hans A nimble archer.

Shining Force II

The Ancient Seal

Story Overview
The sequel to Shining Force takes begins in the kingdom of Granseal. Slade the Thief steals two gems from the ancient tower, but in doing so unleashes a great evil. Bowie and his team explore the world, making new friends (and enemies) along the way. Shining Force II improves on the original in every way, with better graphics, more characters and a huge world to explore.

Main Characters

Bowie The hero of the game. Bowie is a strong swordsman with some basic magic.

Sarah The force's first healer. She has a very weak attack, but gains some offensive magic later.

Chester Chester is a strong knight, and becomes a very valuable member of the team as the game progresses.

Shining Force III

Platform: Sega Saturn

Story Overview
The full story of Shining Force III is spread over 3 different scenarios, each showing parts of the story from a different perspective.

In Scenario 1, you control Synbios, a soldier of the newly formed Republic of Aspinia. Trouble starts when a peace conference is sabotaged, and your force is sent to investigate. Scenario 2 is shown from the perspective of Medion, a prince of the Empire. Julian, an orphan boy, is the lead character of Scenario 3, as he seeks revenge against the Vandal that killed his father.
