Sub Marine Services UK

An introduction to Sub Marine Services, UK, specialists in in-water ship repairs and maintenance including damage surveys, propeller polishing and replacement and anti-fouling. Sub Marine Services Ltd is an independent company established in 1980 with its operational base, workshop, stores, offices and vessel berths based within the Falmouth Docks complex of A & P (Falmouth) Ltd in Cornwall, UK, situated at the entrance to the English Channel.

In-Water Maintenance

Propeller polishing & replacement with Sub Marine Services

Aside from the obvious importance of propellers (which even a land-lubber such as I can understand!)maintaining propeller blades in a good condition has significant benefits for a vessel's fuel consumption. Polishing the propellers offers power savings of between 10 & 20% depending on the degree of fouling prior to polishing. This in turn can lead to bunker consumption savings of between 3 and 8%.

Set against that ship-owners must weigh the cost of having this work carried out - and dry-docking a ship is a costly business. Fine if you have necessary maintenance scheduled but not an attractive option otherwise.

Sub Marine Services specialise in ship maintenance without dry docking. They condiuct a range of in-water services such as propeller polishing and propeller blade replacement. These services can be carried out to an exact standard without the time, inconvenience and expense of a dry dock.

Indeed, Sub Marine Services see distinct advantages to their approach. They have developed polishing and anti-fouling technology, for example, especially suited to underwater conditions. The ambient water both lubricates and cools whilst polishing so it is actually possible to obtain a smoother finish than it would on dry land.

The specially designed pads on the "Piranha" and "Propduster" machines create a vortex using the water to clean the surfaces of a ship's hull and propeller meaning the results are obtained with virtually no abrasive contact. This preserves the metal of the hull and propeller.

Sub Marine Services have even developed procedures and experience in replacing entire propeller blades underwater - a procedure more generally associated with dry docks.

Underwater Survey and Repairs

Assessing and repairing damnage underwater

Sub Marine Services have experience in conducting thorough underwater inspections of vessels and marine srtuctures. This can be as part of general maintenance or in relation to a specific problem or underwater damage.

The first important step is to survey, record and assess the condition of the hull or structure and SMS will provide colour images, a cctv recording with the divers' voice over and a range of information regarding the condition of the metal and the exact nature and size of any problems identified.

In many cases - more than might be imagined - SMS can rectify and repair what they find without taking the ship out of the water again saving both time and expense for the vessel's owner.

Hi Konstantinos, I would advise you to click on the link to the main sub marine services website and email the company from there. SMS do not teach diving as they are a contracting company but I am sure they will be able to offer you some useful advice on UK qualifications etc to point you in the right direction.
