Don't Miss This Magnificent And Interesting Ships Creek Walk Outside of Haast

Every once in a while we visit a place so magnificent and interesting it is worthy of its own page. The Ships Creek Walk, about 20km North of Haast on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand is just one of those places. According to the tour book we used, Ships Creek Walk is one of the most recommended scenic stops on the stretch of road between Haast and Fox Glacier. Here we found a stunning underground forest growing in the swamp waters. The boardwalk kept us safe and dry.

A second walk led over the sand dunes to a stunning west coast beach. Until you can get here yourself, I hope you can enjoy Ships Creek though my photos.

This page is part of a series on our Sept - Oct 2010 driving trip across New Zealand. It is our adopted home, we have been here for 8 years. We have explored many corners of this amazing country, and this page highlights Ships Creek the swamp forest and sand dunes on the West Coast of the South Island - just north of Haast, New Zealand.

Here is proof that I was there too! (The beach was rocks, rather than sand of shell)

ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent

(You will need some kind of protection here)

I have to admit, I haven't tried this but it looks pretty cool. I sure could have used it out on the west coast. The ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent, according to the product description, provides 225 sq ft zone of protection against mosquitoes, black flies, and no-see-ums. It claims to be up to 98% effective, to be odor free and it's cordless. It has been tested by the US Army.

Based on the reviews, people seem to like it, although after reading this review, I don't think I would get one for a child: I bought this device for deer hunting in the early fall when the mosquitoes are still very plentiful. It works great, but the butane heats the device and warns the user not to touch the screen. I had hoped I could just throw it back in my pack when I was finished for the day and move on, but I'm afraid it would ignite something. It's just a minor inconvenience, but one that I would have preferred to know about before the purchase.

If You Are Going to Stop Here, Don't Forget Your Mosquito Repellent

I am not sure if it was the mosquitos or the sand flies that got me

How Beautiful. I have an ex-boyfriend who goes skiing in New Zealand every year.. when there is no snow up here in the Northern Hemisphere. He invited me to go along several times.. but I was not able to get away. I really do have to stop working so much and take time to go and enjoy more of these beautiful places.

Enjoyed reading about your ships creek walk. Great photos but I must say that the swamp forest does seem to have an eerie feel to it. The Kahikatea trees are enormous.
