In Her Shoes (DVD) Review

By Britt Gillette

One of the best date films of 2005, In Her Shoes is a dramatic relationship comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously. Directed by Curtis Hanson, the hand behind such films as 8 Mile (2002), LA Confidential (1997), and The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (1992), the film is successful in a genre where so many of its peers have miserably failed. The casting is superb, and the onscreen interaction between the various characters creates a realistic impression of wavering love and conflict. Based on the novel by Jennifer Weiner, it weaves a tale of two sisters with differing lifestyles and a lifetime of personal baggage%u2026

In Her Shoes begins with the latest installment of an ongoing personality clash between sisters Rose (Toni Collette) and Maggie (Cameron Diaz) Feller. When the shy and reserved Rose is approached by the most eligible bachelor in her law firm, the two hit it off quite nicely. But Maggie ruins the affair when she shows up on Rose's doorstep and steals the man away with her unrelenting flirtations. After constant feuding, Rose kicks Maggie out while contemplating her own future. She takes a leave of absence from her law firm and contemplates dog walking as an alternative career path. Along the way, she encounters another colleague from the firm, Simon Stein (Mark Feuerstein). The two strike up a romantic relationship, but Rose's past threatens to ruin the whole thing.

Meanwhile, Maggie discovers the two have a long-lost grandmother, Ella Hirsch (Shirley MacLaine), who lives in Florida. With no one left to leech off of, Maggie heads straight for Ella's retirement community. But Ella has no intention of being a human punching bag, and for the first time in her life, Maggie meets someone who won't put up with her perpetual self-centeredness and grossly inconsiderate behavior. It's a stand-off certain to change the lives of everyone involved%u2026

Toni Collette is outstanding in the role of the responsible and untrusting sister, Rose. She portrays an overachieving, yet somewhat socially awkward, individual sick of playing the part of parent to her wild and rebellious sister. Her actions are understandable and believable; her reluctance to see Maggie in a new light is well-paced. On an equal note, Cameron Diaz fits the part of the irresponsible, yet likeable, Maggie. Yearning for approval, her arrested development transitions to adulthood in the face of unconditional love.

The strength of In Her Shoes is almost solely attributable to the various performances of the cast and the screenplay itself. This isn't a plot-driven movie, and the slightest bit of awkwardness between cast members or the least bit of forced dialogue could wreck the whole film. Luckily, the audience experiences neither, and most viewers will walk away satisfied with their experience. Kudos to screenwriter Susannah Grant whose portfolio includes box office hits like Erin Brockovich (2000), Ever After (1998), and Pocahontas (1995). Grant's vast expertise in manufacturing high quality scripts provided the cast with a firm foundation from which to deliver their lines. Overall, In Her Shoes is not a blockbuster titan of the big screen. It has few memorable one-liners, but from an entertainment standpoint, it works well. It whisks its audience away to another place and time without leaving them empty handed, and that's what all good movies are supposed to do%u2026

Shirley Maclaine Becomes A UFO Conspiracy Reporter

by Bill Knell

Already a knowledgeable New Age author, researcher and practitioner of sorts, Academy Award-winning Actress Shirley MacLaine seems to have added UFO conspiracy reporter to her resume. In her latest book, Saging While Aging, Shirley reveals what she knows or has learned about various incidents involving UFOs, the military, intelligence services and famous people. The well-known performer that has appeared in almost sixty films to date recently discussed her book and shared some of these revelations with Whitley Strieber on his Dreamland web cast.

One of the most-shocking claims made by the veteran actress is that the late John Mack, professor of Psychiatry at Harvard University and alien abductions researcher, may have been murdered. Dr Mack was killed by a drunk driver as he stepped off a curb in London, England, near Totteridge Lane and Longland Drive on September 27, 2004. He was walking home alone after a dinner with some friends when the incident occurred. Shirley says that another person named John Mack was also killed by a drunk driver around the same time in another part of London.

Another story Shirley shares is one that she heard from Lucille Ball involving the late Ronald Reagan. While he was still an actor, Ronald Reagan was attending a party with several other celebrities at a private residence in Los Angeles. The actor and his wife arrived several hours late. According to well-known actress and comedienne Lucille Ball, Reagan took her aside and told her that he and his wife Nancy had an amazing experience on the way to the party.

Ronald Regan told Lucy that he and Nancy were driving on Mulholland Drive when a UFO landed near their vehicle. Although this story has been told before, a number of new details were added. For example, Shirley MacLaine says Lucille Ball told her that Reagan claimed a ladder appeared and an alien climbed out of the craft. The alien told him to quit his acting work and go into politics. The most popular version of that same story doesn't include the appearance of an alien or what he said to the former California Governor and President of the United States.

MacLaine had a few more surprises in store for Whitley Strieber and his audience. One was that she believed the popular account that President Eisenhower met with aliens at what is now Edwards Air Force Base in 1954. Another was her admiration for the late Dr Michael Wolf and the information he shared with paranormal researchers. Dr Wolf is well known to some in the UFO field as a U.S. Government Insider that spent roughly the last ten years of his life sharing some of what he knew or had learned about UFOs and aliens. Those revelations included as much as he was allowed to reveal about U.S. Government involvement with aliens.

Fellow paranormal researcher Dick Criswell and I spent years speaking with Dr Wolf., Dick much more so than I. Michael Wolf spoke about things involving UFOs and aliens in the 1990s that were completely unknown to UFO researchers at that time. That caused him more than a few problems with many in the UFO research community where already jealous and distrustful people took aim at his claims. Despite almost complete rejection by major UFO research organizations, Dr Wolf's information was credible and time has proven him to be correct. Several video and audio presentations by or about Dr Wolf are offered at http://www.CanYouStandTheTruth.com

Shirley MacLaine first stirred up a hornet's nest with her new book by revealing that Democratic presidential contender Dennis Kucinich (House of Representatives, D-Ohio) had seen a UFO while at one of her homes located near Seattle, Washington. That brought a number of embarrassing questions for Kucinich and revealed how the mainstream media simply refuses to take the subject seriously.

MacLaine's new book is more than just the usual New Age fluff and I'm not sure that her loyal readers are ready for what she has to say. However, I thank her for her honesty and suggest you read Saging While Aging. In a culture devoted to youth, it's important to remember how much we can learn from those who have experienced life and few have done so more fully than Shirley MacLaine.

Review of "Around the World in Eighty Days"

by guest author David Terr

Around the World in Eighty Days is a terrific film! Based on the Jules Verne novel of the same title, the movie is set in 1872 and concerns an around-the-world voyage set by Englishman Phileas Fogg (David Niven) and his humble French servent Passpartout (Cantinflas). The cinematography of various locations around the world is fabulus and the acting is also very well-done.

Around the World in Eighty Days begins at the Reform Club in London, where Phileas Fogg makes a substantial wager with his colleagues that he can take a trip around the world in 80 days. Meanwhile a bank robber has escaped with 55,000 pounds and Mr. Fogg is the prime suspect, so a detective, Inspector Fix (Robert Newton) ends up following him most of the way.

Mr. Fogg ends up in numerous adventures during his voyage. He must take a hot air balloon from Paris, due to an avalanche covering up the railroad. Passpartout must fight a bull in Spain in order to charter a boat to Marseille. He ends up in more trouble in India when he inadvertently lets a sacred bull run free on the streets. Mr. Fogg saves the life of Princess Aouda (Shirley MacLaine), who is to be sacrificed following the death of her husband. The two fall in love and she travels with him the rest of the way home. Mr. Fix and his associates rob and kidnap Passpartout, sending him to Yokohama without any money. Passpartout must act in a Kabuki theater in order to earn money there. Passpartout also gets captured by a tribe of Sioux Indians in the American West, who nearly burn him to death.

Be Yourself - Live Without Fear - Love Life

By guest author Ariole K Alei

These are the amazing words of one of Shirley MacLaine's guides, as disclosed to her in one of her many vibrant, soul-revealing books.

When you think of someone who loves life, what do you think of?

Someone who

is passionate about being alive?

is their authentic self?

dances to their own drummer?

appears fearless?

Being fearless, being our authentic self, and loving life all go hand in hand. They are like close and intimate cousins. As allies, they propel each other into existence.

How can you become more alive and in love with life?

1. Notice the ways in which you wear costumes and masks - ways that you 'protect' yourself and 'hide' yourself, through nervous laughter, a tough persona, stoic independence, or appearing to 'not care' as examples. Be real. Be honest - with yourself and thus with the world. Open your heart. Love more.

2. Notice the ways in which you are tough on yourself. How critical are you - both in how you relate to yourself and how you internally speak to yourself? Love yourself more. Be compassionate toward yourself. Be caring and gentle toward yourself. There is nothing inherently wrong with you - no matter who you are.

3. Uncover your passion for life. Brighten your inner light bulb. There is nothing beautiful or admirable about a person who is dull. You are not dull. You may allow yourself to behave shyly, or appear disinterested. These are merely conditioned ways of 'playing safe'. Take a risk. Go for it. Do something that you've always been curious about or have wanted to explore. Now's the time. Today is when you are truly living.

4. Notice when you feel scared or afraid. Ask yourself, "What am I afraid of?" In doing so you 'shine the light of consciousness on' what was looming over you and controlling your comfort and ease and love of life. Once you reveal it, notice how it shrinks - how you 'disarm it' by simply becoming aware of it. You put it into perspective. As you realize what it is that you're afraid of, ask yourself, "What can I do to move forward toward what I want, even while I feel a little bit afraid?" It's as if you take the fear by its hand - just like you would a child - and gently bring it with you. It stops screaming. It stops attempting to manipulate you and steal your attention. It stops freezing you. ... It comes with you ... And both you and it discover the joys of what it is that you want to explore and discover. It and you love life.

5. Take time to explore what your heart yearns for. This is your soul giving you 'clues' of what will make you really, really happy and fulfilled. Notice when you tend to deny the calling of your soul - your desire to explore things, your desire to experience things. Pay more attention to giving your soul what it is calling for - and you will discover that you are Being Yourself - Loving Life - and Living Without Fear!
