Also posted on FB, I hope many benefit from reading this. Yes, greetings to your sisters!

I bow to you in your courage to share this difficult journey so very openly so that others may have a benefit of your insights of experiences along the way. After all is said and done, you say you would consider ECT again if necessary...we hang on to hope! I'm sure your husband and sisters were a great support to you through this time and continue to be there for you to help with those lost memories. You are and amazing woman!

Featuring you and this lens on my (finally almost complete) Part IV of 'Squidoo people with a good heart' lens. Hope it helps! Please say hello to your sisters for me too (without Amplify I've lost touch with Gabriela, I know, but will visit her asap). Take good care, Rose
P.S. Good to see a purple star on this!

What a story you have. I have an aunt who had "shock treatments" many years ago. I am not sure, but I don't think it helped much. I am glad to know that the treatments have changed over the years. Congratulations for doing what you feel is needed for you to get better.

    What a story to share...
  • sidther Feb 25, 2012 @ 9:58 am | delete
Thank you for sharing your story. I am sorry to hear that you lost your memory. It must have taken a lot of guts to try ECT and even more to share your story.

I can't imagine what would be more horrific: losing memories or living with a severe mental illness. Thank you for sharing your story. :::blessed:::

Thank you for sharing this with us.. it must have been a difficult time for you. Blessed!

Great lens! I believe that ECT works for a lot of people. When nothing else has worked, it would certainly be worth considering for anyone going through the hell of severe depression
  • chromegrrrl Feb 21, 2012 @ 3:39 pm | delete
I'm really impressed with the thoughtful way you approached this topic. No one has a problem going to see the doctor if they have a sprain but when there's a misfire in the brain it's surrounded with shame-- our culture needs to wake up and take the stigma away from mental illness.

This is a valuable lens. I think some memory loss is an acceptable trade off for feeling better.

I have Bipolar Disorder as well, but am fortunate in that at the moment my mood swings are controlled with medication. I have often wondered about ECT - how it was done, what it's side effects were, would I choose it if offered the opportunity. You've provided so much information here, and I'm grateful. Thank you and Angel Blessed!

Very well done. An interesting and important subject. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Since I am med student, I know a lot about the procedure, but I know little about what patients feel about it. I am glad I saw this lens. It has lots of interesting, and useful informations. Thank you!

*Blessed* and posted to my lensography of the lenses I've blessed on the topic of depression. ECT is a taboo topic even by the standards of mental illness, which is already pretty taboo.

My own illness seems to be responding to lamictal, and I hope that continues; but if ECT is ever on the table, reading your story will have helped me a great deal. I hope you get to go back and swim in that volcano some day :)

You shared with such openness and courage. Now if I could reach the same standard for courage at my own Lens.
As a fellow Bipolar survivor , I understand , to some degree that abyssal darkness, and I am glad that you found some relief. take care/

I hope that you find what you are looking for and happiness finds you. You seem to be a decent and sweet person. See you around the galaxy...

Love your guts, courage and honesty. I respect your decision, since it is a personal one. Only you know how dismal you felt prior to having ECT. I have suffered with depression in my life, so I do understand the depths of that pain. . . of never feeling there is a way out. Hope you continue to feel stronger every day. Your sisters are wonderful people too. . it is obviously how much they love you. Hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July.
    Take good care, Rose
