Shogun - James Clavell's masterpiece - epic literature

Book review - "Shogun" - James Clavell's masterpiece

By Clavell, I've read Shogun, Noble House, Tai-Pan, Whirlwind, and King Rat. All of them are wonderful things to read. "Noble House" comes in a close second, but "Shogun" is still my favorite. I just finished reading it again this past summer...
I love the complexities of the multiple plot lines that all interweave, and I love the way James Clavell builds his characters. His books take time to read but I feel that the result is that the reader becomes totally immersed in the wonderful story lines.
It is also one of those books that take time to read because they are epic in scope. Epic literature such as Clavell, Dumas, Dostoyevsky, Defoe, Michener, Dickens and others, is something my mind is drawn to.

Certainly, "Shogun" is a bestseller and "a must read" book for all good reading lovers at any age!

If, by any chance, you did not read until now any of James Clavell's fictional novels - Shogun would be the best choice to start his Asian saga! Hottest Clavell's book!

From the very first page you'll be absorbed by the author ability to draw the reader into another time and place, while enriching your paramount knowledge about Japanese culture, part of its history, human characters, behavior and relationships in a different civilization and under certain circumstances, customs and habits, needs and desires, sounds and scents, thoughts and actions, local natural beauty and much more.

While reading page after page you'll find yourself totally absorbed and captivated by this awesome and complex lecture, you'll forget where you are and who you are, you'll feel like taking part in this story willing to turn the next page, reach to the following chapter and know more and more.

After reading this book, you'll be glad you did that, and you'll be eager to read all the other novels written by James Clavell, each one well documented following a thoughtful scenario.

Don't miss reading James Clavell's fictional novels and you'll feel like a different person, enlighten inside and with new perspectives! : )

James Clavell quote Shogun - Chapter 5

"To think bad thoughts is really the easiest thing in the world. If you leave your mind to itself it will spiral down into ever-increasing unhappiness. To think good thoughts, however, requires effort. This is one of the things that discipline - training - is about." ("Shogun", Chapter 5 - James Clavell)

A bit more about "Shogun" - book review

James Clavell (own photo)As a passionate reader of good literature I already had the chance, along the decades, to be delighted with amazing books describing chapters from ancient mythology and history followed by famous classical to modern authors up to nowadays epics, covering almost any domain of interest.
So, about 25 years ago, when it happened to find "Shogun" novel I thought it would be just an average lecture coming from across the ocean... but I was wrong!
From the very first row read, I was thrilled about author's captivating writing and perfect mise-en-scene, and James Clavell's novel "Shogun" made such a strong impact to me that remain into my mind as one of the best fiction books that I ever read!

This year, after leafing few so said bestsellers issued lately, so poorly done but very well advertised, I couldn't resist and felt the strong desire to re-read this wonderful novel once again.

First time when I read it, years ago, I was very excited to know what's happening next, feeling like I'm a sponge ready to absorb every single information and thought coming from Clavell's rows, being so impressed with each detail, place, historical event or Japanese traditions (even if they might occurred some errors), geographical description, new character coming into the scene and her/ his complex behavior.
At that time I was in rush to find out more and more and reach to the end, which was somehow a loss for skipping essential aspects and omitting to enjoy such a good reading.

Now, while already knowing the content and the end of the story, I read it at my own peace, thoroughly without skipping a line, taking the time and having the luxury to really enjoy the reading page after page, row after row, thinking about what else it might be behind, what else the author wished to present to the reader, let the imagination free creating the illusion that I'm taking part of the action, as well.

Such an amazing feeling that so rarely one author can transfer it to you, the "thirsty" reader.

Please, make a favor to yourself and do NOT watch the poor movie made after this book and DO READ this book for the simple pleasure of a wonderful reading and enjoy learning about other civilizations presented to us from a different perspective in such a captivating manner!

"Shogun" by James Clavell is a worthy reading that you'll enjoy at fullest! : )

Wonderful review article! I loved Shogun. Read it a very long time ago. Perhaps I will read it again and savor it more this time. :)

Nice. I read it many years ago. And I've been to Japan 5 times and studied Japanese in high school and college... I also like the Ichiro Sano novels by Laura Joh Rowland -- they are set in feudal Japan. Congrats on a Squidoo masterpiece!

Way back when I read all of his books starting with Shogun. Even though I was not much of a novel reader at the time, I did enjoy reading James Clavell's books. I was just very conscience of some of the errors in his opinion of the ways of the Japanese culture.

Thank you for visiting my lens and glad to see your comment in regard to it.
Here I only presented a general view over this book - written as a fictional novel! The author never stated or pretend that it's a historical or documentary book.
On the other hand, in any novel the skeleton may be following a real and well documented plan, while the rest is to beautify the content adding whatever author wants for attracting the reader's eye and mind and motivate her/ him to read further.
This book, especially read 25 years ago, was a perfect lecture to me showing a different part of the world and I enjoyed it a lot especially for the complexity of information brought by James Clavell and the way he handled to words - a maestro of writing to me : )

Just line many of the books I read a long time ago, it is time to go back and reread them. This is one of them. Thanks for the reminder.

I love reading Clavell's books. His characters remain with me for some time. I read the Gai-Jin first before reading the Shogun. I should have done Shogun first. Anyway, Tai Pan is another favourite, too.
