Pricewise, they are often in the hundreds of dollars and it's something we buy so rarely, and talk about so little that few people know anything about vacuums. When it's time to finally buy one, you go to the store and feel overwhelmed, seeing products that mean nothing to you. In truth, you don't know if you're looking at the best deal in the world, or a classic ripoff. Here are a few tips to help you purchase with a little more confidence.

First, evaluate your home. Will you be using the vacuum on wood floors or just carpets? Are you going to need to lug the vacuum up and down the stairs a lot or will it be kept predominantly in one are. These types of filters prevent the vacuum from releasing some of the dust and causing bacteria to build in the air. They can be more expensive though so it's worth evaluating how much benefit this provides you.

And of course, always consider brands and reviews. When reading up on vacuums, you want to make sure you buy one that received decent consumer choice reviews. These reviews will help highlight the longevity of the vacuums and their potential reliability. Brands offer some level of assurance that the vacuum will be decent, so seeing a name like Dyson or Miele will help affirm its quality.
