I Love Shrimp Boats! Do you?
Shrimp Boats fascinate me. The horrific Oil Leak of 2010 really had me thinking a lot about the Shrimp Boat and my prayers certainly continue to go out to the shrimpers, their families, and their communities.
I was an adult by the time I actually saw a Shrimp Boat and ever since then I have been so intrigued by them. There is just something mystical about Shrimp Boats and I could watch one for hours as they make their way through the ocean. I was so inspired after the first time I saw one that I painted the picture below.
Would I like to work on a Shrimp Boat or Trawler? I probably would not last one hour but I can certainly enjoy their beauty from the shore and certainly appreciate those who do work on them.

I painted this shrimp boat from a photo I took in Edisto, South Carolina. I painted this for my husband in 1975 which was the year we started dating. It hung in our den for many years and now hangs in my office. It was painted with lots of love using acrylics. A Shrimp Boat Video Made In Edisto

I was told in 2009 that the Sara Jane was the only Shrimp Boat that actually stayed on Edisto Island. The others that you see are from surrounding locations and come into Edisto. I was also told that they were in the process of building a new Shrimp Boat so maybe we will see it on this year's visit.

I had a very bad allergic reaction to shrimp one time so had to be very careful not to eat them or anything that had been in contact with them. After many years of not eating shrimp, I discovered that I am no longer allergic. That is a whole other story but I am so glad that I can now enjoy them again. I am looking forward to seeing many great Shrimp Recipes on this list. Thank you.

My Two Most Favorite Places To Watch The Shrimp Boats
Edisto Island SC and Shem Creek Inn in Mt Pleasant SC
Each year I look forward to my annual trip to Edisto with about 7 other women. We just lazy around and read and watch the ocean. It is so relaxing and really a whole lot of fun. When we were younger, we kept busy all during the day sightseeing or walking on the beach. Now, we are perfectly content to curl up with a good book on the porch.
My husband and I love to go to Mt. Pleasant, SC and stay at Shem Creek Inn. I can be totally entertained just sitting on the balcony of our room. Of course, we always get a room facing the creek side. It is about $20 more but well worth it.
We also love to go to Wild Dunes and have some very special friends who let us use their condo sometimes.

- You won't find a lot of fancy hotels at Edisto but what you will find is the best kept secret in South Carolina

On November 13, 2010 I received this message from Squidoo Lensmaster KathyT.
"Hi OhMe! My husband and I often now sing various renditions of the "Shrimp Boats is a Comin'" song as a result of reading your lens a couple months ago (I signed your guest book back then). We "adapt" it now to many fun things... For example, if something's going on in the area, or there is something we find funny or ridiculous - like news on an upcoming federal prison north of us - we'll burst into song: "Prison is a' comin' there's dancin' tongight... Prison is a' comin' the warden's in sight! Oh won't you hurry hurry hurry here..Oh won't you hurry bring your business here!" Stuff like that. :)
Well, you will NOT believe this, but a few weeks back, we went to a yard sale, and bought a big stack of sheet music (we buy and sell old books, antiques, etc) - and guess what was in the stack? Original sheet music for "Shrimp Boats is a Comin'!" I kid you not... With Jo Stafford on the cover. :)
Anyway, I have saved it and would like to send it to you if you would like it and would like to add it to your lens.
Kathy sent me the sheet music and I was so thrilled. I plan to get it framed and hang in my office alongside my Shrimp Boat Painting.

- My family has been shrimping for 60+ years and my husband and I also own boats here in florida.We have shrimped off the coast of S.C. many times and are sure to do it again.I really like youe site and your passion for the shrimping industry,wish more people would take interes.Shrimping in the U.S. is a dying industry. - Awesome! I really enjoyed your photos and stories on shrimp boats. I've spent time on lobster boats in New England (as a guest) and there are many parallels between shrimping and lobster fishing. Nicely done!
