Come see some great if unknown Maine artists.
The Shy, Novice, and Closeted Art Show provides the opportunity and encouragement for any shy, novice and/or closeted artist of the Bethel region to show their works of art.
The SN&C Art Show is perfect for the person who has only ever once made a piece of art and wants to share it, or for the artists who would like to show their work but isn't ready or is much to shy for a big outdoor art show. Our show is a low key, low pressure venue for displaying works of art and features a huge variety of styles and media, framed or unframed (we are novice!) from folks of all ages, and abilities, for sale or not.
The Shy, Novice & Closeted Art Show has proven to be a delight to all who participate, be it the artist or the art seeker. The show coincide with the larger Annual Bethel Art Fair on the Commons, the Middle Intervale meeting House Art of Quilting show, and Bethel Performing Arts Project Porch Plays.

History of the Show
Inspiration begets inspiration!

The idea for this art show emerged out of two experiences. Janet Willie, host and originator of the show, happened upon a stunning art and craft show held in a parliament building while in Athens Greece. The Greek Government was hosting this show for any government employee who wanted to show their works of art. What a cool way to show an employee they are more than a number, celebrating their creative spirit and soul.
The second experience was Janet's naive move to frame and show her own attempts of putting paint to paper at the local Norway Art's Festival. Art teacher and friend, Deb Lewis, encouraged Janet, to bring out the art living inside of her and then to show it to the world. Janet's wild lashing-out abstracts were best described by one passer-by, "Well, it sure ain't lupine". During this art show, Janet noticed people either attracting or repelling to her work. It was then that she realized a person's art, regardless of the quality or level of skill behind it, is important to somebody out there in the world. Thus the birth of the Shy, Novice & Closeted Art Show.
Each year over 30 artists have participated, ages 3 to 96, all levels of ability, utilizing all mediums. The show is held inside and outside of Janet's home and barn in downtown Bethel, Maine. Magically, shy, novice and closeted artist show up with their art, enough folks come through and offer a helping hand to accomplish all the task of preparing for the show, and ample guest stop by. Many are surprized by the talent, depth, and beauty of this event. The show is witness to the value of a person's art being seen by another person in the world. It is a true win-win.
Each year very shy, inexperienced, or experienced yet closeted artist, participate in the Shy, Novice & Closeted Art Show. Their courage, passion and creativity provide sustaining inspiration for all who come to see. This is truly a inspiring event.
