Siberian Husky Puppy Training

Siberian Husky puppy training isn't as easy as it can be with other breeds. Siberian Huskies are sensitive and intelligent; they need strong and consistent training. While it's possible to train an adult Siberian Husky, it is preferable to start when he or she is still a puppy.

Please, please do not put off your Siberian Husky puppy training! If you have the chance to start young, take it. It will be well worth the effort, because it will imprint on your Husky that you are his leader, not the other way around. Check out this program; it's excellent. It offers a thorough and complete training program that will be very effective for your Siberian Husky.

Be sure to check back frequently! I have lots of Siberian Husky puppy training tips that still need to be posted!

Siberian Husky Puppy Training: How to Pick Your Puppy, Part One

Get your Siberian Husky puppy training; off on the right foot by picking the right puppy. If you have the option to adopt or rescue a Siberian Husky, do it. You'll save a life!

There are certain things you should look for when selecting your puppy. First, talk to the breeder (or the rescue counselor). They should be ready and happy to answer all your questions. Of course, if you're rescuing, some information may be unavailable, but in either case vaccine information is a must. Also, never pick up a puppy before it is eight weeks old. Sometimes you can get a puppy as young as six weeks, but it is better for the puppy if you wait until he's reached eight weeks.

Second, observe the environment. Is it clean? Some mess is to be expected, but if it looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a day or two, that's a red flag. Check the food and water dishes, they should be clean and the water dish should have fresh, clear water.

Siberian Husky Puppy Training: How to Pick Your Puppy, Part Two

Look for the mother. Is she present? She should be, unless the breeder took her out because of overprotection. Either way, the mother should be with the puppies most of the time, and the breeder should be willing to show her to you.

Next, check out the puppies. Do they seem energetic and happy? Of course, you may catch them during a nap, but they should have periods of excitement. Do they get along with each other? Are their coats and eyes shiny and healthy?

Selecting your specific puppy can be a daunting task, but don't worry! Often, a puppy will pick you. If that happens, be happy, but still give the puppy a thorough once-over. If that doesn't happen, watch how the puppies interact with you and each other. You want a dog that is social, not food-protective and definitely not aggressive. Siberian Huskies can be prone to aggression, so watch for any signs of it. Look for a puppy who is happy, inquisitive, friendly and unafraid. Siberian Huskies with those behavioral characteristics respond much better to training.

Siberian Husky Puppy Training: How to Pick Your Puppy, Part Three

You should have narrowed down the possible puppies by now. Pick each one up and look them over. Eyes should be bright and clear. Nose should be clear (a little clear discharge is okay though). Teeth and bite should be straight, and the mouth should look healthy. Check the coats for shine and thickness. Look for fleas. Consider the puppy's looks. Siberian Huskies come in red, gray and black varieties, long or short coats, and their eyes can be brown or blue (sometimes even both).

Of course, if the puppy has a crooked tooth or something else minor, don't automatically reject him. What you're looking for is evidence of current or future health problems. However, if you're looking for a show dog, get to know the AKC standard, and look for any disqualifying features.

Once you've picked your puppy, it's time to take her home. Are you ready? Have your training program ready to go!
