Birding Calendars and Bird Posters by David Allen Sibley

My husband and I have used The Sibley Guide to Birds for a few years now, and we're impressed with the detail of his illustrations and the thoroughness of identifying field marks. I was happy to discover that his illustrations have made their way into calendars and posters.

David Allen Sibley, one of today's leading illustrators of birds, has been called the "modern day John James Audubon".

He is the author and illustrator of The Sibley Guide to Birds, considered to be one of the definitive guides to bird identification in North America.

The son of the well-known ornithologist, Fred Sibley, David Allen Sibley developed an early interest in birds. A mostly self-taught illustrator, he began watching and drawing birds at age 7. After leading birding tours in the 1980's and 1990's, he starting putting together his own illustrated field guide that included more plummage variations than other guides available at that time.

The following Birder's Year Calendars, and Bird Posters showcase David Allen Sibley's beautifully detailed bird illustrations of North American birds.

"Once in a great while, a natural history book changes the way people look at the world.
In 1838, John James Audubon's Birds of America was one...
In 1934, Roger Tory Peterson produced Field Guide to the Birds...
Now comes The Sibley Guide to Birds [by David Allen Sibley]."

Sibley's Backyard Birds of Eastern North America

Scroll down for a larger image of this poster.

This 24" x 36" high quality poster includes 98 species of birds in 144 illustrations. Many of these birds aren't necessarily what we'd see in our own backyards (although some definitely are common in our backyards) , but they're what we'd commonly see in our neighborhoods and in nearby wooded areas, fields, streams, and marshy areas.

What's great about this poster (besides the beautiful representation of the birds) especially if you're new to birding and bird identification is that you can visually scan the poster rather than page through a bird identification guide book to help identify birds that you see.

  • Birds are reproduced in relative scale to show differences in size.
  • Species are arranged by families: finches, blackbirds, woodpeckers, warblers, etc.
  • Illustrations of males and females, breeding and nonbreeding, and juvenile birds are included to help in identification.
  • Region covers area from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains east to the Atlantic states

Sibley's Backyard Birds: Western North America

This is the Western North America counterpart to the poster listed above. There are about 100 Backyard Birds featured that are common to the areas west of the foothills of the Rockies. The birds are shown in intricate detail, and represented in relative scale to their sizes. As for the Eastern birds poster, this is 24" x 36".

To see a larger image of this poster, go to the AudubonMagazine.org article Backyard Birding: Western North America and down at the bottom click on the poster picture. It'll open a pdf file of the poster for you to get a better look at the variety of birds that are included. (The poster in that article is a slightly different version -- but I don't know if it's newer or older than the Amazon.com version here.)

These are lovely. We enjoy watching the birds in our garden and listening to their songs. Incidentally Sibley's was the name of the house that my Grandmother lived in in the 1940's and which was painted by a relative who was a well known illustrator and artist.

Very nice bird calendars, they are something that I would enjoy looking at for a full year. I like to save all of my calendars, because I write important dates and events of them, appointments too. They end up being kind of a diary some years.

That's such a great idea -- keeping old calendars as a kind of diary! I've used old calendar pictures for arts and crafts projects.

These bird illustrations are quite beautiful by Sibley. I watch birds from the window every day. It's exciting to see different birds visit our yard as many are migrating now. Thanks for the introduction to this bird artist!

This is a great guide for birders of North America!

"Beautiful watercolor illustrations (6,600, covering 810 species in North America) and clear, descriptive text place Sibley and his work squarely in the tradition of John James Audubon and Roger Tory Peterson"
