So you want to know some Sicilian secrets eh?

Sicilians have been known to be a secretive lot. But just what sort of secrets does the island of Sicily have?

In conjunction with www.thesicilysite.com, I thought I would do a little expose to satisfy your curious minds.

So here, in no particular order are some of (note 'some of' and 'not all') of Sicily's best kept secrets.

The best kept secrets of Sicily

...honest

  1. Music is a very serious thing
If you make insulting remarks about Sicilian music, this guy will be sent to pay you a visit

  2. Sicilians have been known to eat snakes
Although the Sicilian people are not in the 'if its back faces the sky - eat it' league. There is such a thing as the , Sicilian Snake It's edible and quite tasty too.

  3. The cost of cars is astronomical
When cars replaced donkeys as the favoured mode of travel in Sicily, everyone (except donkey salesmen) everyone welcomed the move. However now in 2008 cars are so expensive in Sicily that , some people can only afford to buy a foot powered Fiat 250 (half a Fiat 500). Still, it does have advanages when looking for comfortable familiar seating in bars and cafes.

  4. The Alps are just so last year
volcanoes are great to ski down. Not down the inside mind you because not only would snow melt, but it might get just a bit hot too.

  5. Mad dogs and Sicilians go out in the mid summer sun
Sicilians are fickle when it comes to visiting the beach. Whilst in the UK we are happy to dash to the beach at the sight of faintest sparkle of sunshine peeping through the clouds, Sicilians like their beaches hot, hot, hot. Beaches are packed in late June, July and August, but go any other time and you can get a good bit of relaxing peace and quiet. Just take a look at the year round temperatures. Also regarding the title there are quite a few mad dogs as well, but give them a bit of attention and they will stick to you faithfully for your entire holiday.

  6. The future is bright, the future is...hmm how can I put this
Sicilians might pretend to forget - but they don't. Sicilians are the elephants of the human world. I don't mean they have massive ears, rather they have very long, very good memories. Still what do you expect from a nation whose language has no future tense. See for yourself. I'll know if you don't and trust me I will not forget.

  7. Wearing fancy dress when you are sober is ok
Sicilians may have a reputation as an insular people, but they love nothing more than welcoming visitors from around the world - just as long sa they come dressed in their national costumes and are willing to parade around the streets wearing them. Ferbruary brings out the Almond Blossom, it brings out all sorts.
