The World of Sid and Marty Krofft

Sid and Marty Krofft produced television programs for children that were very different from the rest. Most of the shows produced by these brothers revolved around the basic story of a child being lost and trapped on a strange world. Viewers could visit wildly exotic places like Lidsville and Living Island, the far reaches of outer space, and even experience the flip side when a sea monster becomes "lost" in an alien world among humans.

With great shows like H.R. Pufnstuf, Land of the Lost, The Lost Saucer, and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters to name just a few, Sid and Marty Krofft made great contributions to "off the wall" entertainment for children and adults alike.

The purpose of this lens is to honor Sid and Marty Krofft and to give you a trip back in time with some of their finest programs. Keep in mind that this is only a partial listing of all the cool shows produced by Sid and Marty Krofft.

H.R. Pufnstuf

H.R. Pufnstuf was a friendly dragon who happened to be the Mayor of a fantastic place called Living Island.

A human boy named Jimmy (Jack Wild) was tricked into coming to the island by Living Islands villain, Wilhelmina W. Witchiepoo (Billie Hayes). Witchiepoo had sent an enchanted boat to tempt Jimmy and his magic flute Freddy into seeking adventures out on the open seas. The boat brought them to Living Island, but Witchie Poo's plans to steal the magical flute were thwarted when H.R. Pufnstuf took Jimmy into his own home - a cave which was the only place where the witches magic wouldn't work.

Jimmy remained stuck on Living Island where everything was alive. A funny thing about the H.R. Pufnstuf show was that most of the voices used for characters like houses, trees, mushrooms, candles, and the like were parodies of famous celebrities like John Wayne and Mae West.

Because of her own terrible singing voice she was jealous of the Bugaloos and tried everything she could do to destroy them.

I loved all of their shows when I was a kid, especially H R Pufnstuf! There will never be kids shows as great as these, ever! I do wonder if Sid and Marty were pufn stuf themselves

I grew up in the 70's so Sid and Marty were a huge part of my memories! Favorite show...hands down....PufnStuf. It just clicked with me. Now, the idea of going to a place like Living Island seems more appealing than when I was a kid. I think that's why adults create these worlds...they're the ones who need the escape! From what I've since learned, Billie Hayes and Jack Wild became great friends and they had great fun with the show and their characters. Talent wise, they were evenly matched; both singers, dancers and actors. Natural performers. I have a lovely pic of them taken a few years before Jack died. Thanks for this tribute page.

Love the lens. I used to watch Pufnstuf and Sigmund and I thought The Lost World was "intellectual" when I was a kid, very sci-fi. I didn't remember Jim Nabors being in a Sid & Marty show, but I remembered Ruth Buzzi as the robot.
