Buying Side-by-side Refrigerators

Side-by-side refrigerators are an increasingly popular kitchen appliance for homes across North America. In their standard format they are divided in half lengthways with one side being a refrigerator and the other side a freezer. These are accessed via two separate doors, one for the freezer and the other for the fridge. This allows the user to open just one door depending on which section is required.

Benefits of Side-by-Side Refrigerators

Division of power

The benefits of a side-by-side refrigerator are many. Unlike with the old refrigerators of yesteryear, the side-by-sides offer more space, particularly in the freezer section. In this way, the ability to identify and pick out food stuffs that one needs is much easier as is the ability to stack more frozen foods into long-term cold storage. More shelving also prevents damage from excess stacking and squeezing often found in older models of freezer.

Types of Side-by-Side Refrigerator

Different shapes, sizes and colors

Like with many kitchen appliances these days, both large and small, side-by-side refrigerators can be purchased in a wide variety of styles, colors and sizes. However, even the cheapest versions are attractive and compliment just about any existing kitchen interior design scheme. The more expensive models look absolutely marvellous and also have added accessories such as ice and water dispensers which can often be found in the door section.

Colors vary tremendously and fridge-freezers of this type can be found in white, black, red, green and many more. There's also a choice of stainless steel which brings a highly contemporary touch to the cooking and food preparation area and match suitably with other appliances and utensils of a similar material. Addition benefits found in many side-by-side refrigerators include ice makers, can dispensers, wine racks and adjustable shelving.

Before You Purchase a Side-by-Side Refrigerator

Considerations and measurements

Before buying any type of fridge-freezer with double doors it is imperative that you take note of measurements in your kitchen or utility area, where the appliance is to be placed so as to make sure the doors will be able to open to their maximum extent. They also do use more energy than regular fridge-freezers so this is something to be aware of.

French Door Side-by-Side Refrigerators

Something a little different

There's another style of side-by-side which is less common and also more expensive. it's called the French Door style and features a fridge and freezer section on both sides of the vertical divide. These are good for conserving energy although probably no more than the regular side-by-side refrigerators and other than originality and perhaps space, there is little obvious added benefit.
