Sidther's Lenses
Ranked #3,786 in Squidoo Community, #287,185 overall
Hi, I'm Sidther!

I have a brand new Blog!
AND I have now started writing on Wizzley!
I joined Squidoo in January of 2011 and fell in love with it. My son has Autism and throughout the past few years I have been told time and time again to write a book. I couldn't though, I have problems focusing long enough to finish one, I have started and abandoned 5 of them. Writing on Squidoo allows me the chance to build up a collection of my experiences and share what I know about Autism with the world! I occasionally write about other things, but find other topics challenging- with ASD, I have volunteered as an advocate for so long I just write about the things people often ask me about or say that they find confusing.
All of my lenses have some personal background to them. I have worked with many children on the spectrum, before that I was an EMTS and have also worked as a rehab specialist in a Brain Injury center. Currently, I am a stay at home mom, advocate and when I am not on Squidoo I am studying molecular biology and ... Autism. There are so many scientific articles and many personal stories online, so I thought I would try to combine the two.
I never give my son's name because although Squidoo is a safe place, the internet in general is not. I never show a clear image of his entire face either- this is intentional- he is my baby! He is fully aware of his nickname and likes it because he is so cute and loves when people acknowledge that! When I ask if he wants a "bigger kid" nickname, he says "not yet, I didn't think of one". When he does, I will have lots of changes to make!
You may notice that some of my lenses hint at my own diagnosis... I was evaluated in college when the sights and sounds were too overwhelming and the counselor thought that my speech was no where near as intelligent as my writing- it also creeped him out that I could not look at him so he sent me off to the campus clinic where they used a ratings scale. Once Cutie was born and eventually diagnosed Cutie's doctors (my son's online name is Cutie) reaffirmed the suspicion. Really I don't think it matters at all either way I am happy and have a wonderful family. Yes, I do know for sure my diagnosis of Sensory Integration Dysfunction is accurate!
Yes, my picture is kind of old! I am always the one holding the camera! As soon as we remember to have my husband take a picture I will update it (if it is a good one!)
Anyway, please feel free to leave me questions etc in the comment areas on any of my lenses or topic suggestions! I would love to write lenses that answer questions about ASD or other stuff that I might have stored in my mellon head!
Random thought...Ever wonder what Sidther means?
When I first tried to start a website years ago I had the sole intention of helping neurotypical people understand more about autism. Then I saw a click box that asked if I wanted to "monetize the site". We needed money, I had no idea if I would ever make any (I have now started making money through Squidoo and LinkShare.com!) I know exactly what it will be used for. Now I am hoping to earn enough to get Cutie long term sensory integration therapy- a friend who is an OT used to provide it, but the military moves us a lot and it is NOT covered. So, Sidther is the Sensory Integration Dysfunction THERapy that I am saving up for!

we usually make all of these lenses together- then he tells me they are actually a shopping list!
Wonder what it is like to live with ASD?
Here are some of my personal stories about caring for someone with ASD and fighting the system to get them what they need.
Since other people have likely dealt with these situations I have met some parents who feel so isolated by the diagnosis and stress that they feel that they can no longer cope. I hope that reading lenses like these can remind people that they are not alone. There are good and bad days. Those bad days just make the good ones so much sweeter! I also sometimes I write these for their therapeutic value- getting it out really does help! Personal Stories About Autism
Basic Autism Tips for families
Activities to help supplement therapy and reach goals sooner
Worse than the diagnosis itself is the discrimination and bullying faced by people with ASD
Most people do not even know that it happens every day every where.
I have had to write letters to schools on behalf of friends, I have had to fight them myself. Kids with ASD are often mis-treated, abused or excluded - even by adults. There are problems within the schools, playgrounds, medical facilities and even at stores and on public transportation or within the child's home. People can be so cruel. Parents of children with ASD are often chastised by strangers, friends and family. I hope that writing these articles will inspire at least one person to stand up and say something if they witness discrimination of anyone with ASD or their families. Random Lenses I made for Fun!
FYI... Nyquil should have a warning about internet access as well!
I am a bit of a geek
and my husband caught a picture of me

If you weren't already aware, to me "fun" is doing something sciencey. I analyze genetic patterns, look at anything I can find in my microscope (and yes, I do bring a small collection kit if I go somewhere) Cutie has already learned lots of neat chemistry (which I think scares his teachers), we watch the stars at night through a telescope and for extra fun, I do love learning a little quantum mechanics (although it is extremely rare that I can find quiet time to concentrate on it with Cutie and the two dogs running around and breaking stuff- so it is a special treat)!
I also love wine! A few years ago my cardiologist said I had to start having a glass of red wine every night. That is great and all since I absolutely LOVE the taste but... I am a lightweight! One glass is actually too much! I find myself throwing out a lot of wine because my sensory issues make any changes in the wine that has already been opened absolutely rancid- to me it is as if the bottle had been left open on the counter for a few weeks even if it had only been open for one night with a stopper in the fridge.
My husband found me the perfect wine! Look at the picture below! It is also pretty yummy!

- I wanted to learn more about you after you reviewed my "Cool Gourmet" lens. I was curious. First, I appreciate your husband's service to his country and your standing by him. I hope that you have your own problem under control, you seem as though you may. I know how hard you must work with a child that has special circumstances, I am a single parent although my boys are pretty much grown up. You certainly are not a stranger to work, in the short time you've been with Squidoo, you've accomplished more than I have and I have three years here. I look forward to looking at more of your work. I hope you and your family are well and happy. See you around the galaxy...

- It is nothing too naughty- I rated it R because I have a section demonstrating certain red flag texting abbreviations that parents should learn in case they discover their child is using them. Since some of these code words stand for adult anatomy and drugs I thought better safe than sorry on the rating! I had totally forgotten I had an R rated lens!

- Great collection of lenses. I see you are Twitter - what does it involve. Am I likely to become swamped by queries on sick animals, so that life just becomes 'wake up - open Twitter - go to the loo - eat - close twitter - go to bed'? I'm very hesitant about signing on until I know more about how it works.

- What a great resource you have provided to help others understand autism. I can see how much time you have spent researching and learning how to navigate the system as an advocate. A standing ovation from this former social worker.
