Siem Reap: Your Gateway to the Temples of Angkor

Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor Wat and the other temples of Angkor built between the 9th and the 13th century A.D. The Angkorian kings not only constructed grand temples and advanced water works but also held economic, cultural and military dominance over an area that covers modern Cambodia and parts of Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Today, these Angkorian temples rank high amongst the world's magnificent architectural wonders.

But this ancient seat of the Angkorian Empire offers visitors not only this World Heritage Site but a vibrant and trendy life in the midst of small rural villages centered around traditional rice cultivation, silk weaving and fishing. Siem Reap has become a lively and interesting destination with its offers of trendy hotels, bistros, art galleries, restaurants and boutiques. Shops are everywhere now with a few night markets competing with each other. But if airport art is not for you, go to Artisans d'Angkor and get one or two souvenirs. You can also watch artisans train villagers in the traditional arts and crafts. If you like silk, go to the Artisans d'Angkor silk farm. There, you can understand the age-old process of making silk from silk worms.

Just a very short drive outside of the city, you will see some of the poorest farmers still planting rice the traditional way. You can also take a boat to where the fishermen live in Tonle Sap. And don't forget to ask your hotel to book you in one of the restaurants offering the Apsara show.

During the non-peak tourist months, you can really grab a stay at some of the luxury hotels for less than a hundred bucks a night. These months are more or less from April - to August. So, plan your trip at this time.

Siem Reap as the Gateway to Angkor

A Young Vibrant City

Siem Reap though a center of the ancient Khmer civilization is a young city as it only developed recently after Cambodia suffered from the ravages of the Khmer Rouge. Cambodians like going to Siem Reap not only to worship at the Angkor Temples but also to enjoy the park with its huge trees which one can hardly find in many of the other provinces. There is still a rural feel to the city given that this province is still the poorest in Cambodia.

How to Get to Siem Reap

A long trip from Phnom Penh

Siem Reap has an international airport with daily flights from Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, China and Korea. Multiple direct flights from Phnom Penh are available daily. Visas are also available at the airport. Just have your passport with 6 months validity, a 4x6 photo of yourself and $20 for a tourist visa.

Bus travel is very popular as the roads and the buses have really been improved. Several companies offer smaller air conditioned vans for around $10. If you want space, book two seats for yourself. Some of these vans targeted to tourists are very comfortable. There also several public buses from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. This trip will take around 5-6 hours. Of course, you can hire your own car or van and have the freedom to stop wherever you want and enjoy some of the attractions on the way.

River ferries also operate this route but it is best taken during the rainy season when water level on the river is higher. During the dry season when water level is low, sometimes the ferry service is suspended. It gives you a glimpse of life on the river and the Tonle Sap, the biggest body of fresh water in Southeast Asia. Your hotels and guest houses can make the arrangement for you.

You can also visit Siem Reap by bus from Bangkok. Take a bus to the border crossing, Aranyaprathet. This will take you about 3-4 hours. You cross over to Poipet, the Cambodian side. From there, take a shared taxi, hire one or let your hotel in Siem Reap pick you up. This trip from the border to Siem Reap will take you about an hour and a half or 2 hours.

Siem Reap as a Destination

One of the 25 best destinations in the world for 2011

Visit Angkor Wat and the other Temples

Angkor Archaeological Park

The temples are several kilometers from town so you take your transport of choice: car, bicycle, tuktuk or moto romauk as the locals call it, or hop at the back of a motorcycle taxi. Forget doing it on foot. It can be really hot or rainy and the distances are far. Angkor Wat, for example, is a city built like a temple. It is huge and just walking inside this temple takes much of your energy. It can be really hot as well so bring your hat and get one of those local cotton scarves called "kroma". Kroma is really good to wipe off sweat or cover your head.

There are many temple ruins in Siem Reap but the most significant are in the Angkor Archaeological Park. The one that must not be missed is Angkor Wat. Add to this, Bayon and Angkor Thom. These are close to each other and can be scheduled together. Bayon offers the giant faces of Buddha and Angkor Thom those big tree roots overpowering the temple ruins and of course, scenes of Angelina Jolie in the movie, Tomb Raider.

To visit the temples and sites at the Angkor Archaeological Park, you need an admission pass that you can get at the entrance. This varies depending on age and number of days you want to spend in the park. For those who only have a short holiday and plan to be at the temples for just one day, get your pass in the afternoon (around 4:30p.m.) and watch the sunset. Then, wake up early (around 5 a.m.) to watch the sunrise and go on to visit the other temples.

If you have more time and want a bit of adventure outside the park, drive to Banteay Srei, the most exquisite of the temples. It is about 30 minutes drive from town. For those who love more adventure, arrange a day trip to the less visited temples of Beng Mealea, Phnom Kulen, Kbal Spean and Koh Ker. Add to this staying with a Cambodian family in the village. Beng Mealea is the temple you saw in the family adventure film, Two Brothers, a story of two tiger cubs separated from each other and the journey that ensued after the separation.

Filmed in Siem Reap

The Movie Two Brothers

You just have to watch this very touching movie on two cubs, brother tigers, separated by events but brought together once more. Filmed in Siem Reap, you will have a good idea of the area around the Angkor temples. Also, it might just be true so watch it and find out for yourself.

Watch the Sun Rise at Angkor Wat

A Siem Reap Experience I Recommend

You may not want to part with your bed at 4:30 in the morning, but I tell you, this is the best time to go and see Angkor Wat. There is nature's show of colours as the sun hits the temple. The orange hues you see in the painting...that is what you will enjoy. The painting hardly captures it. But the best part is: You can enjoy the temple without thousands of others getting in your way. You are not sweating much so you can listen to your guide. And after the main temple, Angkor Wat, go back to your hotel to enjoy that free breakfast.

While watching the sunrise if you stay close to where the coffee shops are, they offer chairs around a very shallow swamp where you can view in the water the contours of the temple as the sun rises. Get a chair so no one bothers you once you have a chair. That goes with coffee, too.

If you don;t like to be bothered early morning, stay close to the entrance walls. Then you can enjoy watching the sun as it shows itself gradually.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat

Go there at 5 a.m.

Sunset at Angkor

Get your day pass for the next day at 4:30 p.m.

When you are in Siem Reap, enjoy the sunset and sunrise at Angkor. It is worth doing just for the experience of so many people waiting for excitement. The walk to view the sunset is a bit tiring as it is going up and climbing up the temple ruins can be challenging. Still, it is an experience. You can ride an elephant going up but it can be scary looking down as you're quite high on top. If riding the elephant is your dream, on top there the elephants take you for a short ride around the square as they wait for their passengers. For a dollar, you can have a picture of yourself riding an elephant.

Important!

When Visiting the Temples

Have time in your schedule to appreciate each temple you visit. Visit one temple in the morning and another in the afternoon. Go early in the morning and late afternoon so the heat does not interfere in your appreciation of the temples. Hats and umbrellas are precious. Don't forget that sunblock.

The Apsaras of Angkor

Celestial Dancers

The Apsaras or celestial dancers are one of the mythical characters that have been the carvers' favourite in the temples of Angkor. There are around 2000 of these apsaras in the temples. The Khmers have developed traditonal dances around many of the myths and this is now called Apsara Dancing. You can watch this performance and it is worthwhile. Some places offer dinner and dance and your hotels can easily arrange attendance to this. Go early so you get a good seat.

The Artisans of Siem Reap

Wood and Stone Carving, Silk Weaving, and Silver Craft of Ancient Angkor

The Khmer Empire and its kings love for monuments has made the Khmers fine artisans especially of stone. They have traditionally carved stones as can be seen in the temples even before the Angkor period. They have also carved in wood and silver. Their silver jewelry are very fine and the same can be said of their cut precious stone. They have also practiced making silk fibers and weaving these into traditional ikat designs. Some of these are now collectible items.

To preserve their traditional art and crafts, Artisans d'Angkor as established a center where villagers can learn the various traditional arts and crafts. They also have a silk farm where again villagers come and learn how to grow silk worms, spin silk fibers from the cocoons, and weave beautiful silk fabrics. Visit these centers and see the work of the artisans in the making. You can also purchase items from these centers, a welcome support for the trainees.

Pub Street in Siem Reap

Have a Fun Evening here

This street in Siem Reap with its restaurants, shops, galleries and upscale bars is full of life once the evening starts. This is where most people go and dine al fresco after the French tradition. A number of the restaurants are also galleries so there is so much to enjoy. Some restaurants have the Apsara shows as well so as you eat, you also enjoy something about Cambodian culture.

While here, try putting your feet for the fish to clean up in one of those fish aquarium or haggle for souvenirs in one of the shops. Some of the shops are owned by non-government organizations who do development work so it is always good to support them.

Angkor Artifacts of Siem Reap

What do you think?

Many artifacts in the temples of Angkor in Siem Reap have been stolen in the past. It is disheartening when one sees how limited are the displays in the museum at Siem Reap because many of the artifacts have been stolen, shipped to Bangkok and sold to private collectors. There is hope that some of these collectors might return the artifacts so these can be displayed in the museum here.

Inside each of these villages are presented different Khmer architectural styles, traditional dance performances, traditional wedding ceremony, and games.

Tonle Sap Floating Village

Enjoy the sunset and the boat ride

Take a boat to where the fishermen live in Tonle Sap. A combination of lake and river system, Tonle Sap is the biggest body of fresh water in Southeast Asia measuring about 16000 sq.km. wide and nine meters deep during the rainy season. It has been designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1997. This includes the surrounding provinces of Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, Pursat, Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey, and Pailin giving you a picture of how big Tonle Sap really is. It is one of the most productive inland fisheries in the world providing around 75% of Cambodia's annual fish catch.

Because of the abundance of fish, floating villages where fishermen and therifamilies live abound in Tonle Sap. These floating villages have now become a must see for tourists. While I am not in favor of gawking at other people's lives, thsi is truly interesting. Stay the day and observe how people live and interact with the large numbers of tourists who now come and visit. It might still make a sociologist of you.

Old Market wins heritage protection

The Apsara Authority has announced this January that buildings around the Old Market will be listed as part of the national heritage protected under the National Heritage Protection Laws. Most of these buildings were built during the French protectorate so they're around 100 years old. Planners are now realizing that these old buildings are attractive to tourists.

Other buildings that will soon be under protection are some of the old houses built of bamboo or wood raised on stilts. They tell of how Khmers build their homes in the past, a tradition that needs to be preserved.

Gee if I ever visit, you've covered everything to see, do and even bring with me. I don't leave home without my Tilley.

I suppose the structures of Angkor Wat are one of the most prominent indicators of the cultural similarities between the Indian subcontinent and South-East Asia dating back to many centuries. Would certainly want to visit Siem Reap some day.

Oh, you have enticed me to want to visit! Cool to see that leaves are used to play music! I myself could make some "sounds" when I was a kid, living in Cleveland, Ohio, and playing the weeping willow leaf.
