Sign Language Alphabet

When looking at diagrams of the sign language alphabet, it is easy to see why some of the letters are represented by certain hand and finger hand and finger positions because they resemble the positions. Many of the hand and finger position simply look like the letters that they represent. For instance, the letter V is represented by holding up the pointer and middle fingers, and the letter W is represented by holding up the ring, middle, and pointer fingers.

Other letters are represented by certain hand and finger positions because they resemble the associated letters as closely as possible, but the fingers can be used to produce a limited number of letters without confusion. For instance, a U and a V could both be represented by holding up the pointer and middle fingers. To avoid confusion, though, the U is represented by holding up both fingers together and leaning them to the side.

While the sign language alphabet is not difficult to learn for those that are willing to invest some practice time, it often presents certain challenges for those that are just beginning to learn the letters. Many people have difficulty remembering when the palm should be faced toward the signer and when it should be pointed in another direction. To some degree, this problem is created by visual representations of the alphabet that have the palm pointed in whatever way makes it easiest to see how the fingers form the letters' shapes.

While pointing in certain directions might make it easier for many people to see how the letters should be formed when they are learning, it can make it difficult for them to remember when they should turn their palms to face themselves. Two of the letters that are most commonly learned incorrectly are C and O. On many illustrations, these letters are shown with the palm turned to the side. This might make it easier for a learner to see how the letters are made, but they are incorrect. Instead, the palm needs to be pointed towards the reader instead of to the side.

Many people also have problems remembering which way their palms should be pointed when they are signing numbers. This is also a problem that is often caused by illustrations of the signs for the numbers. The numbers one through five should be made with the palm facing the signer, not the reader. However, the numbers zero, and six through nine should be made with the palm facing the reader. Many people often get confused by the direction that their palms should be facing when they are making numbers, but some practice can usually correct this problem.

Using the sign language alphabet can make it possible for you to communicate with more people through sign language. The alphabet can be used when you are not certain of how to sign a certain word, or if a word does not have a sign associated with it. The alphabet can usually be learned easily if a person is dedicated enough to put in the practice hours that will make the signs automatic.
