Are Sign Language Videos an Option for Learning ASL?

American Sign Language is the principal sign language of most deaf Americans. It is also used by many deaf Canadians and by other communities. According to Gaulledet University, it is the third most spoken language after English and Spanish.

If you need to learn sign language, there are various options available. Obviously an in class option is often the best for many people. Unfortunately local classes are often not available or easily accessible. A sign language video course is a second best option, and in many ways a superior one to an in person class.

Why? Because video obviously allows you a replay option which allows you to ability to review and proceed at your own pace. Constant review and mastery is critical in any language, but in many ways much more so in sign language since it is quite unfamiliar to most students. There are several video options available. The course we recommend is the Interax Sign Language Video course.

Unlike sign language books, this video course shows the motion, speed, direction, and key facial expressions of each sign. The instructor clearly illustrates and immediately repeats each sign, allowing you an opportunity to perform the sign. The English equivalent of the sign being demonstrated is provided on the screen, allowing the hearing-impaired to use the course without a caption decoder.

The lesson and sign numbers aid in finding a particular section of the DVD. Designed to fit your schedule, the 6.5 hour video course is divided into 57 subject related lessons on 6 DVDs. For more information visit Sign Language Videos.
