An insider's look at Signature HomeStyles
This interview provides inside information about running a successful home-based, direct-sales, party-plan business as a Signature HomeStyles representative. For the past three years, Rhonda LoSchiavo has been a Signature HomeStyles representative and team leader. As her husband, I thought it would be interesting to interview her so that other women (e.g., stay-at-home-moms, women interested in part-time employment, women who dream about owning their own business, etc.) could learn more about running a home-based business.
Since 1971, Signature HomeStyles (formerly known as Homemaker's Idea Company) has been a family-friendly company that offers women an opportunity to build their own home-based business selling an exclusive line of decorating and organizational products. Although Signature HomeStyles has over 10,000 representatives throughout the United States and Canada, it is still one of the best kept secrets in the direct-selling industry. Basic Info About Signature HomeStyles
Frank: Tell me a little about Signature HomeStyles.Rhonda: It's a home décor party plan business founded by Madolyn Johnson. We specialize in home décor and in storage and organizational products. Signature HomeStyles has been in business for 40 years. It's debt-free, and we're currently hiring new representatives. We have a lot of fun too! Here's a picture of me with Madolyn in Mexico.
Frank: That was a great trip! I loved the whale watching.
Frank: What sparked your interest in Signature HomeStyles?
Rhonda: I was looking for a way to pay for my daughter's college expenses, but I didn't want a traditional 9 to 5 job. Signature HomeStyles wasn't well-known in my area, so I figured customers would be excited to see something new. I liked that the products were priced reasonably, and that there's something available in everyone's price range. The catalog is beautiful! I figured the products would sell themselves.
Frank: What makes Signature HomeStyles different?
Rhonda: With several other party plan companies, the representative is responsible for covering part of the hostess benefits. Signature HomeStyles covers all of the hostess benefits. Orders are shipped directly to hostesses, and everything comes "bagged and tagged" with each customer's name for easy distribution. Compared with other home décor companies, our prices are typically better. And hostesses are well compensated for their shows. An average hostess earns over $100 in free product and 7-10 half-priced items.

Candle Fundraiser Now Available!
Frank: I hear there's other big news at Signature HomeStyles?Rhonda: Yes! An organization can now partner with Signature HomeStyles to reach its fundraising goals when its supporters order any of our six beautifully-scented Candle Tumblers. The candles are easy to sell and they are only $10 each! The scents include Warm Apple Pie, Toasted Almond, Fresh Gardenia, Lemon Tart, Sugar & Spice, and Ocean Breeze. Your organization would earn a 50% profit. For example, if 30 members of your organization were to sell 10 candles each (that's 300 candles and $3000 in sales), then your organization would earn $1500 in profit. The candles make great gifts for anyone: grandparents, co-workers, teachers, friends, neighbors, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc.
What Are The Benefits of a Home-Based Business?
Frank: What are the benefits of a home-based business?
Rhonda: I love that I can set my own schedule and that I rarely need to set my alarm clock. In general, you can work when you want to, so it's easy to work around your family's plans. You can earn paid vacations each year, free jewelry, and you can give yourself a raise by building a team. With Signature HomeStyles, you work for yourself, but not by yourself. It's nice to interact with the other women at local meetings, at the yearly convention, and while away on company-sponsored vacations. The social component is really important to me.
Frank: How much money can you earn?
Rhonda: I can earn more in a couple of hours than I would have earned the entire day at my previous job as a driving instructor. And Signature HomeStyles is much safer than driving with 16-year-old kids! A representative earns about $100-$150 for an average show. And you have the opportunity to earn bonuses and overrides for your sales and the sales of your team. According to company records, in 2008 an average Team Leader earned $1313/month, an average director earned $2006/month, an average Sr. Director earned $2746/month, an average Exec. Director earned $5186/month, and an average Sr. Exec. Director earned $11,031/month. I'm continuing to build my team, and I'm continuing to make more money.

How Do You Get Started?
Frank: How much does it cost to get started?Rhonda: Our Signature Show Case is only $149 and our Select Show Case is just $99. The Signature Show Case is the best value, but choose the option that works best for you. Each Show Case includes a variety of samples and all the supplies you need to get started. A $25 shipping and handling charge plus applicable sales tax is charged for all Show Cases.
Frank: How do new representatives receive training?
Rhonda: We have a wonderful quick start package that has all the necessary training materials, including a training guide and DVDs that show sample presentations. We also schedule weekly conference calls, but the calls are recorded so you can listen to them at your convenience. We have about 3 years worth of conference calls online. They offer great tips for building your sales, bookings, and your team. And I'm always available for one-on-one mentoring. In general, representatives can get as much support as they need. I'm just a phone call away.
Frank: Where do new representatives find business?
Rhonda: Representatives generally find business through friends, family, and people they meet while out and about. If you host your own show and invite family and friends, you'll be surprised by how many will be happy to book shows to help you get your business started. Once you get some momentum, it's typically pretty easy to keep things going. The important thing is just to get started!
