Signs of Miscarriage

Signs of Miscarriage - what you need to know.

Every pregnant woman needs to know the signs of miscarriage. First of all what is a miscarriage? Medical experts say a miscarriage is when a pregnancy spontaneously ends before 20 weeks of the pregnancy.

Figures show that 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage. It is more common than you think. Some women do not know they are pregnant so the figures could be higher.

The causes of miscarriages can include genetic abnormalities, infection, medications, hormonal effects, problems of the uterus, and the mother's immune system. Whatever the reason, it is good to be aware of the signs of miscarriage.

A woman may experience a range of signs that could lead to a miscarriage. The signs differ depending on how advanced the pregnancy is and what caused the miscarriage. Of course it is different for everyone There are signs that are the most common.

The signs may include:

light vaginal bleeding;

vaginal discharge;

pain similar to period pain (cramps)

no longer 'feeling' pregnant, for example, the tender breasts and nausea associated with pregnancy may disappear.

If you have any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor. In many of these cases the symptoms settle down and the pregnancy continues as normal.

If it is a miscarriage the cervix opens, and part or all of the contents of the uterus come away and pass out of the vagina. There are several more severe signs of miscarriage.

  • Bleeding becomes heavy.
  • Pain is like bad period pain or birth contractions.
  • Faintness and nausea.
  • You pass what looks like blood clots.

If you experience any of these symptoms call your doctor or local hospital immediately. Of course call an ambulance if you need to.

Signs of Miscarriage - My Story

Here is my story. I hope sharing it will help others.
I lost my first baby at 6 weeks, it was an ectopic pregnancy. ( An ectopic pregnancy is when the fertilized egg gets stuck in the fallopian tube. It can be very dangerous if it ruptures the tube)
I was very sick and had a week in hospital and another 2 weeks at home recovering. Because I was physically sick people sent me flowers and get well cards.
It took another another 6 months to get pregnant again. I had an early scan to check it wasn't ectopic. It wasn't and I was able to see the heartbeat of my baby. Around 12 week I starting having cramps. I lost this baby too. This was particularly difficult since I had seen the baby on the scan. People's reactions were different this time as I only had one day in hospital and I was back at work the next week. I wasn't physically sick but mentally this was so hard for me. Emotionally I was a mess. People just didn't know what to say to help.
My third pregnancy was very different and I had terrible morning sickness from 6 weeks but I knew this was good and we had a beautiful baby boy.
My next pregnancy, two years later, was another 6 week miscarriage. Difficult, but I had my little boy to focus all my love on, while I waited for another chance to give him a baby brother or sister.

My last pregnancy resulted in my wonderful daughter. Looking back I sometimes wonder how I got through all that but with my fantastic husband, family and friends I did and now have 2 great kids.

Is Your Body Baby-Friendly?

Unexplained Infertility, Miscarriage & IVF Failure - Explained and Treated

A unique book-the first of its kind. No longer do patients have to accept that their infertility is "just bad luck" and they just have to "keep on trying."
No longer should women with recurrent miscarriages have to listen to their doctor telling them that their loss was "God's will" or that they ought to be thankful because their baby was probably chromosomally abnormal.
The statistics simply do not support such claims-in fact, they show that repeated reproductive failure can be a symptom of wider health problems in the mother.
Furthermore, the root cause can be treated-not only to promote the chances of a successful pregnancy, but to improve the mother's health long-term.

Avoiding Miscarriage

Everything You Need To Know To Feel More Confident In Pregnancy

Written in the warm and accessible manner of a knowledgeable friend, this highly unique book is the first to enable women to evaluate their own risk of miscarriage and take steps to reduce that risk.

There are only four major causes of miscarriage, and targeted questionnaires help each woman clarify whether she might be at higher risk in any of these areas.
Each cause is explained thoroughly but clearly, with the information and support women need to improve their chance of future successful pregnancy. This makes the book as relevant for women who have never even been pregnant as it is for women who have experienced miscarriage.

The book presents a detailed overview of miscarriage, dispels common myths, provides flow charts to help reveal the cause of any previous unexplained loss, and offers positive, practical options for action.

It is written from the patient's perspective, drawing on sympathetic case studies to introduce each chapter and presenting complex medical research in a way that is easy to understand. The reassuring and upbeat tone inspires a positive attitude, and the book enables each woman to identify the path that is right for her based on her unique personality and circumstances.

Avoid Caffeine

Who knew that a cup of coffee could have such an affect on you unborn baby.
Caffeine doubles miscarriage risk
Caffeine doubles miscarriage risk

Pregnant women who drink two or more cups of coffee a day have twice the risk of having a miscarriage as those who avoid caffeine, US researchers said on Monday.

They said the study provides strong evidence that high doses of caffeine during pregnancy - 200 milligrams or more per day or the equivalent of two cups of coffee - significantly increase the risk of miscarriage.

Amazing Ectopic Pregnancy

Baby survives to full term

BBC News Report "A woman in Australia has given birth to a healthy baby girl after a rare full-term ectopic pregnancy.

Against all odds, baby Durga survived despite developing in her mother's ovary instead of her uterus.

Most ectopic pregnancies end in miscarriage or are terminated early because of the risk to the mother.

Just 1-2% of all pregnancies are ectopic, and in 95% of those cases the egg is fertilised in the fallopian tubes on its way to the uterus. "

This is an amazing story. Having had an ecptoic pregnancy that was in my fallopian tube, I find this an unbelievable story. I was in so much pain, more than labor! So I am pleased this lady got to have her baby.
