Silicone Implants

At a recent American Society of Plastic Surgeons meeting, it was announced that the FDA had approved silicone breast implants, and that soon, all plastic surgeons will be able to provide their patients with a new breast implant option.
At times, the announcement caused fever pitched conversation and a large buzz within the crowd. It seemed as though the announcement was like the Holy Grail was now being provided to plastic surgeons across the country. Why?
"The approval of silicone implants is a great thing, but the choice between the two is something the patient needs to decide, not the plastic surgeon," says Dr. Fata in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Since 1992, when the FDA banned silicone implants, breast augmentation surgeries have grown 306%. Clearly, not having a silicone breast implant option is not that big an issue.
There are two questions that must be answered: First, Are saline implants really that bad? Second, What are the benefits (or possible benefits) of silicone implants?
To answer the first question, no. "Saline implants are a very good option for women who want to enhance their appearance," says Dr. Fata "Obviously, if saline implants were an inferior product, the number of breast augmentation procedures would not have sky rocketed in the past 13 years."
The benefits of saline implants include:

• High Approval Rate (Over 90% of breast augmentation patients would recommend the procedure to another woman)
• Proven Track Record
• Sterile saline solution is basically harmless to the body
• The complication rate has dropped
• Fewer number of ruptured implants
• Fewer number of capsular contractures (formation of hard scar tissue)

Unfortunately, saline implants are not as soft as natural breasts, they are heavier, they can cause sagging over time, and sometimes they can cause noticeable ripples in the skin.
So what will silicone implants provide? At the moment, since they have not been widely used since 1992, there is not a proven track record that can provide us with all the benefits silicone implants can provide. So why are all of these plastic surgeons so excited about the approval of silicone implants?
The possible benefits of silicone implants include:

• Softer than saline implants
• Less chance of rippling
• Less chance of capsular contracture
• Lighter, and thus less sagging

At the moment, silicone implants are not being widely used, and because of this, we cannot tell if they will in fact be able to provide women with less chance of rupture, capsular contracture, or leaking into the body. What is known is that the new cohesive silicone implants are lighter and feel more natural.
Silicone implants are now being made out of a cohesive silicone solid gel. This means that the inside of a silicone implants should stick together, so that if the shell of the implant was to break or rupture, the gel inside would not leak into the body. This is a great advancement over the silicone oil that was used in older implants.
In saline implants, the sterile saline solution is harmless to the body, so if there was an implant rupture, then there was no harm done. With the older silicone oil implants, if there was an implant rupture, then the silicone oil used to fill the implant could create a number of different problems after entering the body.
So what should plastic surgeons do? The choice between silicone and saline implants should be the patients. At the moment, it isn't really possible to tell which implant is better than the other. Plastic surgeons should provide their patients with both options and the available information about them; once that is done, the patient can determine which one is right for them.
There is no reason for breast implant patients not to try the newest generation silicone implants. However, they should be shown all available data, or lack there of, on both implants. The only thing missing from silicone breast implants is a track record of their advantages and disadvantages. Only time will be able to show what type of implant is better, or which implant is chosen more by patients.

Silicone Implants

Silicone Breast Implants Add Choices For Women

After more than ten years of controversy and scientific study, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved silicone gel breast implants for general usage. They are now available to all women ages 22 and higher for both reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery.
The availability of silicone implants will greatly expand the options for women seeking cosmetic breast augmentation. In many situations, they have real advantages over saline breast implants. They tend to look and feel more natural than saline implants. They are less prone to rippling or crinkling which can sometimes be felt and occasionally can become visible under the skin. They are lighter than silicone implants. However, they are thought by some to have a higher rate of capsular contracture, which is scarring around the implant and can make the breasts hard.
In countries where both silicone and saline implants have been available the vast majority of patients and surgeons select silicone implants. This is testimony to their advantages. In the US, we are likely to see a large number of patients select silicone breast implants.
But there will still be a place for saline implants. Some people might simply prefer not to have silicone placed in their body. Silicone implants are more expensive than saline implants. In some cases, the implant is used as a sort of platform to elevate the normal breast tissue rather than to give the breast the entirety of its shape. In this situation, saline implants function just about as effectively as silicone implants.
Silicone implants have not been shown to cause autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus, as had been feared. But patients should realize that any breast augmentation procedure is essentially temporary. Body shape and anatomy can change, there might be problems with healing or the body's reaction to the implant. At some point, it is likely that additional procedures may be necessary. At Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery, we are already doing quite a few breast augmentations with silicone implants. I expect we will see many more people interested in the procedure in the next few months.

Summer Sees Breast Implant Numbers On The Increase

As summer arrives women flock to the salon for a new hair style, perhaps to get their nails done, and maybe even that bikini wax. But did you know the summer season also sees an increase in the number of breast implants? In fact, it is the busiest time of year for plastic surgeons.

With summer comes plenty of outdoor activity, where the wardrobe of the day is scanty, and with the beach comes those sexy little two piece swimsuits, and there lies one of the reasons that breast implants go up during the summer.

Many women decide they don't like what they see in the mirror whether in that skimpy bikini or favorite tank top, so they make that first appointment with the plastic surgeon.

Since the reinstatement of the silicone implant, some women are reconsidering investing in silicone; however, there is a big cost difference between silicone and saline breast implants. Women on a budget are still geared towards the cheaper saline implants.

And even though silicone breast implants have been given a clean bill of health, there is still some uncertainty. With such a bad rap in the past, some still fear their health is at risk if they choose silicone.

If you've been thinking about getting the breasts you have always wanted, why not give a plastic surgeon a call for a consult today. You could have that sexy body you deserve in no time.

Breast Augmentation - What's It Going To Cost?

You've likely explored all the advantages and disadvantages of having breast augmentation surgery. If you have decided this is something that's right for you, you are left struggling with the cost of breast augmentation.

Like most medical treatments, breast augmentation is not cheap and shouldn't be done cheaply. And if you find a doctor who will perform the procedure cheaply, don't be tempted. Don't put your health at risk from a shady practice. That said, you should certainly price shop just as you would for any other consumer goods. There is no set price structure, so shopping can certainly save you some money.

Breast augmentation prices certainly do vary depending on what part of the country you live in and how many qualified plastic surgeons are in your area. You can expect to spend from $4,000 to $10,000 for your breast augmentation. It can decrease if you live in an area where there are many qualified plastic surgeons all competing for the customer, and the opposite can occur if there is only one surgeon in your area.

It is important to understand that you pay for the quality of service. Therefore, if everyone in your area is charging $5,000 and one surgeon is charging $2,000, you need to ask yourself why? You really do pay for what you get, and imagine how devastated you would be with a botched breast augmentation procedure, never mind that you could be putting your life at risk with infection and poor surgical procedures.

Always have a consultation with your potential surgeon, and always check with the board to make sure that he/she is board certified and has no problems outstanding on their file.

Most plastic surgeons offer payment plans to assist you in being able to afford your breast augmentation. They understand that most women simply don't have cash available to pay for the surgery outright.

Don't be scared off by the price of breast augmentation. There are many options available to you.

Grow Your Own Nipples

You may think you've wondered over into the twilight zone or something worse. Grow your own nipples? What the heck does that mean? And why would you want to do that?

Although it may sound far fetched, it was reported in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery that researchers have devised a method of growing nipple colored skin in the laboratory. This is actually great news, especially for women that have had reconstructive breast surgery after a mastectomy.

This group of scientist is the first to grow the pigmented nipple skin and the skin color does not fade. So although it may seem "way out there," it's truly a boon for women who have had breast cancer.

Older methods required stealing darker pigmented skin from other parts of the body or simply tattooing a nipple. However, the new grown nipples still require some work according to researchers at South Australia's Flinders Medical Center. Tim Neild says the grown nipples look great at the beginning, but they tend to break down over a short period of time.

Researchers are working on methods to stop the skin's pigment from fading, and they are also working on longer life expectancies of the lab-made nipple. Sure, these lab grown nipples may not be quite ready for market yet, but for women that have had breast cancer or those that will have it in the future, grown nipples are very promising. Combined with breast reconstruction, women will have a breast that looks as natural as the real thing.

Teens And Breast Implants

It seems it's not just adult women who are getting breast augmentation. Teen girls are lining up for breast implants. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says that 333,000 girls 18 or younger had some type of plastic surgery done.

These numbers included procedures such as laser hair removal, chemical peels, and breast implants, which was the most popular.

Breast augmentation is the number one requested graduation gift. No one can actually put numbers to it, so no real research has been done. But it's the general consensus in the plastic surgeons offices nationwide.

The big controversy out there is whether plastic surgeons should be doing cosmetic surgery on bodies that have not yet finished developing.

For example, breasts will continue to develop into ones early twenties, so teens that think their breasts aren't large enough and who choose to have breast implants may discover upon full development that they did not need them.

Another concern is that there have been no studies on the how safe these procedures are long term when performed on teens. The FDA has a position against breast implants on teens under 18, but there are no enforcements.

Teens are the age group that is most likely to not like their appearance, but as we get older, we become less dissatisfied with our appearance. In fact, they believe almost 50% of teen procedures would not have occurred if they had waited until they were adults.

Breast implants in teens has a high rate of complication that results in necessary surgery within a 5 to 10 year period. That means, during their 20's and 30's, they'll be facing more surgery, and it also means they will need more money set aside.

Many plastic surgeons would agree that it is much better if teens wait until they are young adults to make the decision whether breast implants is right for them. However, few are likely to turn down a teen if they are mature and know what they really want. The surgeon will assess the situation during the consultation and make their decision from there.

Do Creams Work For Breast Enhancement?

If you want larger breasts and you don't want surgery, why not just slap on some of the breast enhancement creams on the market? How often have you seen these advertisements?

But do creams really work for breast enhancement?

There are all kinds of breast enhancement creams that are topically applied, claiming to increase the size of a woman's breasts. Many women dream of having firmer, fuller breasts that are more voluptuous, and there are all kinds of products that claim to be able to do just that.

Many times the breast enlargement creams are marketed as part of a total breast augmentation system, which included pills, a vacuum pump, lotions, and potions, although sometimes it's simply the cream. All offer the same thing - bigger, more beautiful breasts.

Breast enhancement creams may be a helpful part of a natural augmentation program. Not so much because of what the cream does but because the act of massaging the breasts helps to make them firmer and fuller. There are many different breast massage techniques that claim to accomplish this.

Massage can encourage the flow of blood to the breasts, which can give them a look and feel of being fuller, and even increase the size. That's one reason why perhaps the vacuum pumps see some results.

Breast creams aren't magical - what they do is add moisture to the breasts, which plumps up the skin. That creates a slightly fuller, more youthful breast.

Breast creams usually contain estrogen or progesterone and sometimes a variety of herbs. Dong Quai, fenugreek, and wild yam are popular choices because of their estrogen and progesterone qualities. Women from the Middle East are said to wash their breasts with fenugreek and eat lots of fennel to increase the production of fatty tissue in the breasts.

Do creams work for breast enhancement? The answer is no.

Even in an indirect way, are creams some type of permanent breast enhancement program? Not at all.

These definitely aren't the answer for a guaranteed and beautiful breast enhancement.

Do Herbal Pills Work For Breast Enhancement?

Rumor has it you can save thousands of dollars by avoiding a surgical breast enhancement by simply taking some herbal pills. So do these herbal pills work for breast enhancement? Not at all!

Let's not discount their effectiveness completely. A women needs estrogen, and increases in estrogen and progesterone can increase the size of a woman's breasts. That's why when women start taking birth control, many times their breasts become larger.

What the herbal pills do is use herbs that contain phyto-oestrogen which are similar to estrogen and therefore, have many of the same effects of estrogen. Most of these pills also produce a progesterone effect, which is necessary for safety. It offsets the ill effects of the phyto-oestrogen.

These herbal formulas work by stimulating the production of estrogen, so in effect, the breasts may increase in size from the estrogen boost. If the herbal pills work at all, they can actually be dangerous unless you stick to herbs that have been approved by the FDA.

For example, herbs like Dong Quai Root have been used for centuries for menopausal symptoms and they are known to assist the body in producing estrogen. Fenugreek has long been used by women for its hormonal properties, and it is used regularly in herbal pills for breast enhancement.

There are all kinds of herbal pills on the market and some may give temporary swelling to the breasts but by no means are they considered a method of breast enhancement. If you really want larger breasts, it's time to see your surgeon and discuss the safest, most studied, method with breast implants.
