The Process of Creating Silk Art.
So you think creating silk art is easy?
I was motivated by another Squidoo member to talk about the process of creating silk art. Gee, doing it, is easier than writing about it. No, that's a lie, it's not easier. My first silk creation was a scarf. I was attending an art class, and was told that creating this scarf would be fun and easy.
It was neither!
I looked at the blank pure white silk, and my mind went blank. What do I put on this scarf?, I wondered.
Well, bubbles came to mind. So, I took the tube of 'gutta' and began to draw wobbly circles.
I had to wait about an hour for the gutta to dry.
Then I was given a choice of hundreds of dyes that could be placed inside the circles. I did so with a shaking hand. Some of the dyes seeped out onto other parts of the scarf. I was crazy upset. " That's not where I wanted those dyes to go!" I shouted.
My instructor laughed. " Relax, and enjoy the process." She advised.
So, ok, the dyes went on. Then the scarf had to dry overnight. This allows the dyes to penetrate into the silk fiber.
The next day, we gathered up the scarves made by the class, and began to place each scarf between layers of sheets. Then we rolled these layered scarves onto a roll of chicken wire, and placed the bundle into a steamer. Silk has to be steamed for two or more hours. This sets the dyes deep into the fibers.
Ok, steaming is done. We take the scarves out, wash them in a special soap, then rince till the water is clear. Next step: iron the scarf.
Zippity do-da. I couldn't believe my eyes. The silk scarf was beautiful. I sold that scarf a month later at a craft and art show.
Now, after creating so many works of art, that first silk creation, to me, was a breeze to do.
I've uploaded a photo of a silk painting that in some ways shows the brilliance of the colors.
She's called " Picasso's Moon"
