1. What is silk woven paintings and calligraphy?

The SILK PAINTING or SILK CALLIGRAPHY is NOT the painting painted on silk, in fact, they are the paintings woven by silk. They are also called SILK BROCADE PAINTING. Inheriting Chinese traditional silk weaving arts and handicraft and combined with new weaving technique to produce 100% pure silk woven paintings and calligraphy, the paintings and calligraphy are exquisite and lifelike, with soft and luxurious gloss of silk to the original works. These paintings and calligraphy are often used for collection, home and office wall decoration, and as the high-class present.

2. Are these paintings and calligraphy original artwork or reproduction?

It is hard to say. Because some paintings and calligraphy are reproduction of famous paintings, and some watercolor paintings are designed by the factory itself. Though some are reproduction, they are much different from the original artwork, for these paintings are woven by silk, not painted on paper. If you regard them as a craft, they are original.

3. Are these paintings and calligraphy worth collecting?

Still hard to say. We can't said all the vintage paintings are worth collecting. So like other artworks or crafts, that depends on the time, quality, technique and content of the silk paintings. The fine silk become more and more expensive, so does the artwork and craft made by silk. Some high-class silk woven paintings are collected and exhibited by many Chinese museum now. But besides collection, they are often used for home decoration, and also very suitable as high-grade gift and present.

Famous Painter - Xu Beihong

XU BEIHONG

Xu Beihong(1895-1953), born in Jiangsu, was a famous Chinese painter. Considered a modern master in China, his merging of Western techniques with classic Chinese approaches was unmatched. He is particularly known for his shuimohua depictions of horses and birds. Xu Beihong was a master of both oils and Chinese ink. Most of his works, however, were in the Chinese traditional style. In his efforts to create a new form of national art, he combined Chinese brush and ink techniques with Western perspective and methods of composition. He integrated firm and bold brush strokes with the precise delineation of form. As an art teacher, he advocated the subordination of technique to artistic conception and emphasizes the importance of the artist's experiences in life. Of all of the Painters of the modern era, it can be safely said that Xu is the one painter most responsible for the direction taken in the modern Chinese Art world. The policies enacted by Xu at the beginning of the Communist Era continue to control not only official Government Policy towards the arts, but they continue to direct the overall direction taken in the various Art Colleges and Universities throughout China.

Famous Painter - Zhang Daqian

ZHANG DAQIAN

Zhang Daqian(1899-1983), was a native of Neijiang, SiChuan in China. He took the religious name Daqian upon becoming a Buddhist monk, and after returning to the laity he called himself "Lay believer Daqian." At the age of 21 he sought out as many paintings by famous artists of past centuries as he could to copy. Beginning with an impressionistic style and progressing to meticulous brushwork, he developed the ability to move between these techniques with complete master. In 1941 he traveled to DunHuang where he spent two years and seven months copying wall paintings. Here he studied traditional coloration and line drawing methods, being particularly moved by the grand scale and complex layout of the high Tang style. The sumptuous splendor of high Tang art inspired him with the desire to create great art. Zhang Daqian traveled widely in Europe and America, where he came into contact with the contemporary art movement in the West. This spurred a sea change in his methods of painting, and he created unique splashed-ink and splashed-color styles, expanding the potential of plane surfaces and coloration. In his later years, he combined splashed ink and splashed color with the masterly texture strokes and liberation of his early years to form a new synthesis. Hovering between concrete and abstract, reveling in freedom and unpredictability, Zhang Daqian's work created a whole new style of modern Chinese painting.
