Flowers and Trees

Flowers and Trees is a Silly Symphony Disney cartoon that tells the story of three trees. Two of them are in love with each other, but an old stump of a tree tries to come between them.

Produced in 1932, Flowers and Trees was a technological marvel at the time: It was the first cartoon to ever be produced in color. Originally it was going to be in standard black and white, and in fact was more than halfway done when Walt Disney had the whole thing scrapped and redone in color.

The experiment paid off. Flowers and Trees was a huge success, and became the first cartoon to win an Academy Award.

How Flowers and Trees Saved Silly Symphonies

Disney started producing the Silly Symphony cartoon shorts in 1929. While the Mickey Mouse shorts were stories built around recurring characters, the Silly Symphonies were cartoons inspired by music.

Unfortunately, the shorts didn't do so well in the beginning. They were eclipsed by the much more popular Mickey Mouse cartoons. They also had fierce competition in the form of Betty Boop.

Flowers and Trees was cutting edge: No one had seen anything quite like it before. After that, Disney decided to produce every Silly Symphony short cartoon in color. He signed a two year contract with Technicolor, granting his studio exclusive rights to produce cartoon shorts with this technology.

After that, Silly Symphonies became even more popular than the Mickey Mouse shorts. More than that, the series became a test bed for experimenting with new technology, stories, and characters. This gave Disney's animators the skills they needed to produce their first full-length animated feature film, Snow White.

Although Flowers and Trees is rarely mentioned or remembered, it was a landmark in Disney history.
