About the Grasshopper and the Ants
The Ant and the Grasshopper was originally a fable told by Aesop. The story is about the importance of working hard so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor later on; those who idle and spend all their time playing will pay dearly for it in the end.In the original story, the grasshopper seeks help from the ant. The ant simply criticizes the grasshopper for not working during the summer as he did, and lets the grasshopper freeze to death.
Disney changes the ending a bit, giving us a happier outcome.
One of the notable things about this Silly Symphony is that the grasshopper is voiced by Pinto Colvig, the same man who provided the voice for Goofy. You can probably tell!
You shouldn't soil your Sunday pants like those other foolish ants. Come on, let's play and sing and dance!
The Grasshopper Song: The World Owes Me a Living
The grasshopper sings a catchy little tune: "Oh, the world owes me a livin'!" This is of course accompanied by lively fiddling music. This song would later become Goofy's theme song of sorts. You can sometimes hear Goofy singing it to himself in his cartoons.
A bit later in that same year (1934), Shirley Temple would sing her own version of this song.
Shirley Temple Sings, "The World Owes Me a Living"
