Three Little Pigs - A Disney Classic

The Three Little Pigs was one of Disney's most popular Silly Symphony cartoons. It made such a splash after it was released in 1933 that it ran in the theaters for months, and it won the 1933 Academy Award for best animated film. The song "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" became something of an anthem that lifted people's spirits during the Great Depression.

The Three Little Pigs is based on a fairy tale of the same name. Of course, Disney made some changes to the tale to make it less depressing--nobody gets eaten here!

What Makes the Three Little Pigs Special?

Before Three Little Pigs, animated characters were usually defined by how they looked. This Silly Symphony departed from the norm by making identical-looking characters unique based on their actions and personalities.

The Practical Pig stands out from his brothers based on his gruff attitude, actions, and voice. You'd be able to pick him out even if all three pigs were wearing the same outfit. But Disney also expanded on each pig's personality by giving them clothing, instruments, and houses that reflected who they were.

The lessons Disney learned about making physically similar characters distinct from each other would later be applied to the dwarves in Snow White.
