A Tribute to Silver Christmas Bells

During the holiday season, images of gold and silver bells are common - Salvation Army volunteers ring bells to collect money for charities, radio stations and shopping malls play songs like "Silver Bells" and "Jingle Bells," Christmas trees are decorated with bells, and stories such as "The Polar Express" celebrate Christmas bells. Here's a salute to silver Christmas bells and the wonderful sound and imagery they bring to the holidays.

Wallace Sleigh Bell

Silver Christmas bells are an annual tradition

Each year since 1971, Wallace Silversmiths has been producing collectible sleigh bells. "Silver Bells" Lyrics

Classic song was inspired by Salvation Army bell ringers

"Silver Bells" is a classic Christmas song, composed by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. The song was introduced by Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell in a motion picture called "The Lemon Drop Kid" in 1951, and the first recorded version was by Bing Crosby and Carol Richards in 1952, which also became a hit in late 1952. The lyrics are unusual for a Christmas song in that they describe the holiday in the city, and not a rural setting.

According to Wikipedia, the song "was inspired by the imagery of Salvation Army bellringers standing outside department stores during the Christmas season."

"Silver Bells" Lyrics
City Sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there is a feeling of Christmas
Children laughing, people passing
Greeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you'll hear.

Silver Bells, Silver Bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day.

Strings of streetlights even Stop Lights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush home with their treasures
Here the snow crunch, see the kids bunch
It Santa's big day
And above all the hustle you'll hear

Silver Bells, Silver Bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day.

Silver Bells, Silver Bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas Day.
Soon it will be Christmas Day.
Soon it will be Christmas Day.

"Silver Bells"

"Ring-a-ling, hear them ring. Soon it will be Christmas Day."

Amazon Price: $11.07 (as of 12/05/2009)Buy Now

Amazon product description: One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder.

Christmas Bells

A poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the poem "Christmas Bells" on Christmas Day, 1863, after learning his son had been injured in the American Civil War. It was later set to music as the song, "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day."

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!"

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
