Charms for Charmcasters

Beautiful jewellery for a modern witch

When you're thinking about what gift to get the spellcaster in your life, why not consider a silver charm.

Silver symbolises the Mother Goddess in many Pagan traditions and wearing silver jewellery honours Her. The silver witch charms selected here would look lovely on a simple charm bracelet, and may even find use in the next round of spellcasting or celebration.

Silver Goddesses

in myth and legend

A depiction of the moon goddess from a Goguryeo tomb - North Korea/ManchuriaThe colour silver represents the Goddess in many lands and many times.

Arianrhod of Wales.
Artemis of Greece.
Britomartis of Crete.

Sarpandit of ancient Sumeria.

These, and many other Goddesses around the world are represented by the Silver Moon. Crescent, full, new, or dark. Each phase of the moon represents the Goddess in her many aspects.

Charms in History

and before

By Unknown Rama (Rama Own work) [CC-BY-SA-2.0-fr (www.creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/fr/deed.en)], via Wikimedia CommonsCharms have been worn since the earliest prehistoric ancestor of man picked up a funny shaped rock, or an unusual seashell and decided to carry it with him for good luck. In truth, we don't know how many thousands of years people have been wearing and carrying charms, but evidence from archaeological digs suggests it goes back a very long way indeed.

The first pieces of jewellery that we would call charm bracelets emerged in Egypt during the age of the Pharaohs. Charms were worn not only for protection and to show status in this lifetime. They were used as a sort of identity tag to help the Gods lead the wearer and his possessions to his correct place in the afterlife.

When in Rome Wear a Charm

ichthus charmI couldn't find mention of the first use of charms during Roman times, however, they were were used by early Christians in Rome as a means of identifying each other. This suggests to me that charms were in use for other purposes during this time.

The ichthus charm is still used today to help Christians recognise each other.

Charm Bracelets Today

Still popular after all these years

gilded oval pendant - MedievalCharms were worn by knights and kings in the Middle Ages. They represented wealth and status, but could also have been used for invoking incantations of protection or to bring harm to an enemy.

They slowly went out of favour with the aristocracy during the Renaissance, but never disappeared completely. Until Queen Victoria made wearing charms fashionable again. They were worn now not as signs of status or for protection but instead as pieces of jewellery. Trinkets of glass beads to amuse and delight. Tiny lockets and such that could hang on bracelets and necklaces.

Charms remain just as popular today.

Very well done. I personally love the cauldron charm-I seen one in North Carolina during one of my visits and had to choose between the cauldron or a silver goddess with a moonstone. I choose the goddess and went back for the cauldron during another visit, but the store had closed. Goes to show when you see something you want try your best to get when it there because if not, it will be gone. *Blessed*

Super lens! I always remember one of the charms my mother had (still has somewhere) when I was little - it fascinated me. A tiny church with a magnifying glass as the window, if you looked inside the marriage vows were written on it.

Lovely silver jewelry...I love moonstones in silver as the two seem to magnify each other. Thanks for sharing.
