What's shaking, TV-holics? I'm Jager Weatherby with Wetpaint Entertainment, where we're starting to get really excited about the premiere of Simon Cowell's The X Factor on Fox this fall. If you think this reality singing competition is just an American Idol clone, you're in for a big surprise. Here's all you need to know about how The X Factor works. First off, unlike Idol and many other talent-based shows, The X Factor welcomes solo artists and groups, as well as performers ages 12 and up. In other words, if your 95-year-old grandmother Hazel has the voice of Celine Dion, tell her to go for it! The entire competition is made up of five stages. To start, there are the producers' auditions, which determine which lucky folks will get to do their thing in front of the judges. Second are the judges' auditions, and third is boot camp, where the remaining contestants work on their technique. At this point they narrow down the field to 24 acts broken up into four groups: Girls aged 12 to 25, boys aged 12 to 25, individuals over 25, and groups. The judges — Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, L.A. Reid, and Paula Abdul — will each be in charge of one group. This brings us to the fourth stage, the judges' houses. Each group heads to its corresponding judge's home, where the singers continue to hone their skills. Finally, we have the live shows, aka the finals, where the acts still standing compete for America's votes. The judges mentor their assigned group of contestants, picking songs, weighing in on style choices, and even staging the numbers. They also judge other judges' groups. So, what's the big prize? Maybe big isn't the right word... we're talkin' HUGE. The winner of the season will be awarded a recording contract worth a whopping $5 million, paid in five annual installments of 1 million.
