Tips on How to Train Your Dog - Do it Right The First Time

All dogs need dog training, there is nothing worse than Rover jumping all over you (especially after he has just been playing in a mud puddle) or barking constantly, chasing the wildlife or just basically being disobedient.

Perhaps you have just been given or purchased a new little puppy, or maybe you have taken in a stray dog that needed a home. Everyone will be much happier when Rover has been properly trained to obey your commands. Dogs are like kids, they need guidance and someone to look up to as their master. Once you have their respect and they know who's boss, then you will have a well behaved dog and life will be much more pleasant.

Is it Hard to Train a Dog?

The good news is that it's not hard to train a dog. It does however, take persistance and patience, but the results with be the best reward. Training a dog does take some time, and its best to break it down into 3 - 5 lessons per day, with about 5 - 10 minutes per lesson.

You will get to know how long your dog can concentrate for, however don't push the dog beyond his/her capability. The dog will dig its heels (or paws) in - you know what they say "Never work with animals or children" - well its not impossible, but what they are trying to say in this quote, is you cannot make an animal (or child) do something they dont want to do.

It's better to hang up the lead and leave it for a while, then start fresh when your dog won't respond. Whatever you do, do not get cross with your dog. Think about it when you have to learn something new. It takes a lot of concentration and energy and its no different for your canine friend.

Hand Commands to Train Your Dog

I believe that hand signals offer an excellent visual way of the dog understanding, combined with a verbal command. This way if your dog cannot hear you, but they can still see you, they will know exactly what it is you are asking of them. The commands to use should be simple so as not to confuse your dog.

A simple stop signal with your palm facing out, could mean stay, a finger pointing down, could mean to sit.

Can You Teach an Old Dog New Tricks?

There is an age old saying - "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." I beg to differ. When we got our puppy, we lived in a ground level home. About 2 years later we moved to an elevated house, and she did not know how to climb stairs. She learned quickly.

After a number of years, of not coming upstairs anymore, when our second dog passed away, we decided to let our old dog upstairs again. However she had forgotten. So I set about re-training her.

She was 9 years old when I successfully re-trained her to climb the stairs. It was certainly not as easy as when she was young with no fears, however we did it.
